The Howel plane is really no different from a compass or circle plane, it is attached to a large curved fence that rides along the top of the staves. The Howel cuts a smooth shallow hollow, to give a level place to cut into with the next tool the Croze which cuts a narrow groove for the barrel head. The Croze has a similar wide fence that rides on the ends of the staves, but with either a saw-tooth type cutter or two nickers and a single tooth like a router plane. The head of the barrel fits into this groove and is made up of two or three boards doweled together and smoothed with a large shave called a swift. The cooper cuts the edges to a fine bevel of the head to fit snugly into the groove cut by the Croze. A tool specific to the cooper that has been in use since the making of barrels and wooden buckets for hundreds of years without much change to the design or how the tool is used. A Bick or coopers anvil is a tool used to fabricate the iron hoops that a cooper would produce to hold a barrel together. The hoops are first cut to the required length and then beaten into shape and riveted on the Bick or Tee anvil. This wedding photo is of local pioneer families, Cooper and Larkins. John Cooper Jnr. married Annie Emma Larkins. The exact date is unknown. This is not only important for the Cooper & Larkin families but for historical reference for the Tawonga area where these families lived. It shows that even though the Kiewa Valley was considered remote during this period the tradition of a big formal wedding was still held with fashionable weddings. This photo was included in a group of photos. This photo has historical significance as it depicts members of local pioneer families getting married. It also is representative of the style of wedding dresses of the period and the style of men's wedding attire. The photograph itself is also significant as is demonstrates the style and formality of wedding photos during this time. The picture frame is likewise the style of the period. The article is a reprint of Legatee Kemsley oration at the funeral on 2 April 1980 at St Andrew's Anglican Church Brighton. The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee John Cooper, born in 1919 and died in 1980. During his war service he served in 2/4th Field Regiment with 7th Division in PNG and Borneo, gaining the rank of Lieutenant. Tawonga is in the Kiewa Valley where farmers lived with their families. The school was opened on 27th July 1880 situated on 8 acres near the current township of Tawonga. This school was erased by fire in 1900 and all records were destroyed. The school then moved to the old Tawonga Hall. In 1910 the school was shifted to its present site on 3 acres of land donated by Frank Cooper. The school building and attendance continued to grow especially during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Historic: Tawonga Primary school has educated the local farming and town children for many years. It is an excellent source of the names of the local families in 1903. The photo is taken outside the Old Tawonga hall where the school was situated in 1903 and shows the clothing worn by children and teachers at the time.Teacher and 20 students in school photo.
