The microphone can be seen in the front window. Note no windscreen wiper. Tram running a route 77, Prahran. Has tail lights and dash canopy lighting with the sign "This is you car use it" underneath. The front number can just be seen. In Swanston St and adjacent are W2's. Note the milk cart to the right of the tram. Photo taken early 1960, as both trams are in the process of being fitted with dash canopy lighting. Both trams have White Horse Whiskey advertisements on the dash panels and No. 27, an Age newspaper advertisement as well. No. 27 has destination of Sebastopol and No. 30 - Lydiard St. Nth. The slide appears to be a copy slide, given the nature of the colour and the additional number WP419. Photographer could be Bill Pearce (WP). Slide rescanned at 3200 dpi 25-10-2020, jpg replaced, tiff file retained. In an e-mail from Mal Rowe dated 2/9/2019, he advises "If it is Essendon (and that looks right) especially noting that 454 (in the background) was allocated to Essendon at that time, so Essendon is pretty certain. The tram is most likely 927 - the only dash canopy SW6 with a number including 2 allocated to Essendon in the period. Geoff Warburton's tables say the three holes were cut in 927's dash in Nov 1951 and the it was converted to headlights in December 1951! As you say, looks like MMTB staff - in the pit in their suits! Has the Golden Square hotel in the background and an Age advertisement on the dash panel. Note the large overhead pan at the terminus. .1 - tram has arrived and the driver/conductor has place the pole on the overhead after turning the pole. .2 - Driver/conductor standing by front of tram. Date of photo on folder - 26/9/1962?? or 1 Jan 1963. A date on the front of the folder of 1/12/1959 is too early - tram has been painted with tiger stripes and fitted with dash canopy lighting. Same date on Ballarat folders as well - see negative number N392 etc. Crew member wearing a great coat - unusual for Bendigo on a new years day. Photo early 1960's.
