This is a photocopy of the original diary which was donated to ANZAC house by John Howden, F.W. Mawson's nephew. Copied using Surrey Hills Historical Society funds with permission of Anzac House librarian, Fred Pratt. The people are identified as Mr Walter Bonwick and his sons. The photo was taken in 1936. Walter Hugh Bonwick (1899-1964) was an engineer. He married Christina Erica Strom (1893-1984) in 1924. Her parents were Herman Strom and Mary Eadington Rule Pyatt. Christina served as a staff nurse in WW1. She enlisted on 8 May 1917 and embarked from Melbourne on board RMS Somali on 30 June 1917; she returned to Australia on 17 July 1919. Her diary is digitised on the Australian War Memorial website, along with a typed transcript. Frederick William Mawson and his wife Mary (nee Mullard) and baby daughter, Beatrice Mary migrated to Victoria as steerage passengers, arriving in Melbourne on 1 July 1882 on the sailing ship the ‘Holmsdale’. They settled in Bona Vista Avenue, Surrey Hills (house demolished) and he established a jam factory in Boundary (Warrigal) Road. Further children of the family were Harriett, Muriel, Ethel, Winifred, John and Frederick William (Jnr). The later died in WW1 and there is a transcript of his diary in this collection. Four of the daughters became nurses, three serving in WW1. The other son John became a local builder, who after the war built 'Holmsdale' in Union Road as a convalescent home to be run by his sisters. After the death of his first wife Frederick (Snr) married Catherine Small, a widow with children of her own.The family were early settlers in Surrey Hills and their story in relation to the service of local men and women during WW1 is well documented.Vertical file of information related to the Mawson family which includes: 1. It can’t be purchased and may only be worn by those who have served their country. The shield design is symbolic of the protection provided to those who wear it. Anzac Day school children's medal, issued in 1916. The medal was struck by the Education Department of Victoria for distribution to school children in 1916 to commemorate the first anniversary of Anzac day. Photos of an RSL Conference where Legacy had a stall of photos explaining their work. The yellow paper captions name a Legatee standing with Legatee Sullivan as being Barry Durkin. Also a photo of Betty C Lawson MBE, Florence Nightingale Medal, FCNA, MID, attending the conference who noticed the book 'We are here, too' in which she has written the foreward. The letters and diaries of Sister Olive Haynes, a nursing sister in WW1 provide a unique look at life at the front. Her son became a Legatee, David Dooley as her married name was Olive Dooley. The date is unknown but probably 1991 the year John Sullivan was president. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991.A record that Legacy had a presence at an RSL Conference. Colour photo x 5 at an RSL Conference and two yellow paper labels. One label says "Legatee Garry Durkin received a certificate of appreciation at the RSL State Conference awarded for services to metal welfare."
