Dorothy was a friend of Nella Lord (nee Sebire). Dorothy passed away in 2007. It was to be known as The Franz Striezel Collection. Franz Streizel came from Germany in 1886 and was one of the three recognised craftsmen (Art Carvers) in Australia who contributed to the wood carvings in public buildings and honour boards throughout Australia. The National Gallery at their request had two small panels and a tobacco jar (some of his work), donated by Mrs D Adamson. They considered these pieces highly valuable.A handmade square wooden card table featuring an ornately patterned inlaid top of lighter coloured woods. Dorothy was a friend of Nella Lord (nee Sebire). Dorothy passed away in 2007. It was to be known as The Franz Striezel Collection. Franz Streizel came from Germany in 1886 and was one of the three recognised craftsmen (Art Carvers) in Australia who contributed to the wood carvings in public buildings and honour boards throughout Australia. The National Gallery at their request had two small panels and a tobacco jar (some of his work), donated by Mrs D Adamson. It has red velvet lining inside the lid and inner base. There is a lift our red velvet lined wooden tray. The lid is attached with brass hinges. An ornately hand carved dark wooden heavy nursing chair with a carved figure of a child and gargoyles on the front of the back rest. The seat is highly patterned too. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest. This Issue celebrates the 50th Anniversary of CMHS Helen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. The Newsletter is an important record of the activities of the CMHS and this month Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of CMHS.Issue 18 of the bi-monthly, City of Moorabbin Historical Society Newsletter produced by Society member and Secretary, Mrs Helen Stanley in October 2010. . Notice of AGM October 30th and Celebration of 50th Anniversary of CMHS. The earliest item of correspondence is a typed and signed letter from the historian Dorothy Rogers to Mrs West, Secretary of the Kew Historical Society, dated 13 Feb 1966. It relates to transport, including horse trams that travelled through Kew. Another letter from B F Bade in 1986 identifies the hitching post as having been once located outside the old Kew Town Hall in Walpole Street, and dating from 1907. The latter was acquired in 1987 and installed in 1988 during the Bicentennial. One photo shows Legatee Chas Wilks with Mrs Dorothy Bell sitting with a Brighton school boy playing the trumpet near them. The other photo shows students assembled for the service. A tree was planted in tribute to Legatee Tom Bell. In later years the boys from Brighton Grammar Junior School raised money from the sale of Legacy badges and the serving Legacy President would present them with a plaque of appreciation and photos were taken in front of the tree planted in honour of a late Legatee Tom Bell. Between 1991and 1995 the boys raised in excess of $16,000. Dorothy was a friend of Nella Lord (nee Sebire). Dorothy passed away in 2007. It was to be known as The Franz Striezel Collection. Franz Streizel came from Germany in 1886 and was one of the three recognised craftsmen (Art Carvers) in Australia who contributed to the wood carvings in public buildings and honour boards throughout Australia. The National Gallery at their request had two small panels and a tobacco jar (some of his work), donated by Mrs D Adamson. They considered these pieces highly valuable. it was a wedding gift to Mr Franz Streizel's daughter Frieda Streizel approximately 1910. A heavily inlaid veneer two door cabinet with carved Egyptian style heads in the middle of each door set in a triangular pattern. There are two small drawers and one long drawer at the bottom of the cabinet. Keys are kept nearby in a wooden box in the same collection.cabinets, furniture, storage and display furnirure -

Dorothy Edhouse was the only child of James & Frances Hill, who were Sylvia Woodhead's grandparents. "James Hill (Jimmy) came to Phillip Island in 1920 and purchased the Hotel, known as Woods Family Hotel. (Later, the Phillip Island Hotel in Walpole Street, now demolished). A milestone occurred whilst in his capable hands, when he installed an electric light plant, (32 volt), the first on the Island. He also made hundreds of cement bricks, when he built his own home. Later he purchased a building in Thompson Avenue, where he established a Billiard Saloon, with a small shop attached. He died in 1937, aged 68. His only child Dorothy Edhouse, is now 95 and has made arrangements to have her ashes added to her fathers' grave." This was added to the photograph of James Hill and Frances Edith Hill - not sure what date it was compiled by Richard Woodhead. Frances died in 1960. The write up was take from "Garden of Memories" by Edith Jeffrey. Four documents/photograph relating to Cr J O Edhouse and his wife Mrs Dorothy Edhouse. Also came with accompanying letter from Sylvia Woodhead. 361-01: An Invitation to a Dinner at the Isle of Wight Hotel - 26/11/1943 - on the occassion of the visit of Delegates to the Gippsland Shires and Boroughs Development Association Annual Conference. 361-03: Identity Card for Dorothy Symes Edhouse. 361-04: Circular from the Liquid Fuel Control Board dated 21st February 1942. 361-05: Photograph of James & Frances Edith Hill.
