Pastel Portrait, A portrait of Friedrich Goldschmied
This pastel portrait by Robert Hofmann is of Friedrich Goldschmied. He was born in a Polish village on 28 May 1912, then part of the Austrian - Hungarian empire, but lived for the early part of his life in Vienna. By 1938/39 he and his stepfather, as Jews, fled across Europe and somehow ended up in England by 1940. His Mother, who refused to believe the danger, sadly ended up in one of the camps. In England he was interned as an enemy alien on the Isle of Man. Refusing to join the Pioneer Corps he was a passenger on the notorious Dunera. I am sure you know this nasty bit of history and remained in the camp in Tatura, as far as I know, until returning to England in 1947. As you see from the portrait it was drawn in 1941 by Robert Hofmann, also an internee in Tatura. He married in 11 February 1954 and died in 29 October 1978. His wife died last year (2014).This portrait was drawn by Robert Hofmann, in camp 2 at Tatura. Lurline Knee is responsible for writing the history of this artist and Friedrich Goldschmied. This is a pastel portrait of Friedrich Goldschmied by Robert Hofmann.friedrich goldschmied, robert hofmann, tatura internment camps -

GOWRIE PARK- Gowrie Park Road, Tatura.|Alexander and Georgina Stewart sailed in 1859 from Mochrum, Scotland, arriving in Corio Bay. In 1872-73 they came to Tatura and selected near the town, being one of the early selectors. The place was called Gowrie Park, still known by that name, and still in use as a dairy farm.|Before the Presbyterian Church was built in Tatura, all the services were held at Gowrie Park. The old dairy for keeping milk, cream and butter is still there today. Only two families have owned the property since the 1870®s, and the house has been beautifully renovated and extended.Photo 1: 15 x 11 cms. Photo 2: 10 x 6 cms. -

Toy Truck, Rev. Friedrich Schroettler
This fire truck was made by Rev. Friedrich Schoettler, a Missionary with Lutheran Mission at Ammele and Wanjma in New Guinea. He fled to Australia, from the Japanese, during WW2, being a German national. He was interned at Tatura, Victoria, where the internees made toys to sell for spending money. This truck was given to me, Don Kuhne, by my parents for Christmas about 1944. I am surprised that it lasted as long. My brothers used it. We towed it around the farm behind push bikes, etc. In the early 1960's I worked with Lutheran Mission New Guinea and had the pleasure of knowing Rev. Schoettler, helping with aerial food drops to his small mission station.Maroon truck, yellow radiator, black running boards and mudguards, green tray, 2 wind up handles with a pulley and cord which operates an extension ladder mounted on the tray of the truck. Map - Map - Photocopy, New Guinea Escape Route
At the end of January 1942 there was only about 250 men left in Wau, as the women and children had been evacuated by air a little earlier. With no planes to take the men they had to make their own way to Port Moresby and then travel by ship to Australia. Some men went down to Salamaua and made their way along the north coast, but small groups also made their way over the Owen Stanley Ranges; rafting down the Lakekamu RIver to Yule Island and by boat to Port Moresby. Donor Vanessa Kiessling's Father was part of the second group, and had drawn a detailed map of their route. This might be the same route taken by Rev. Willi Hertle (Ref C0750)Photocopy of New Guinea map showing escape routePlan of surveyed route from Edie Creek to Bulldog Dromepapua new guinea, escape, map, wau, willi hertle, kiessling -
