George Nixon (1862-1941) selected land in Bete Bolong in the 1890's. He married Emily Warren in 1889 in Orbost. He was a shire councillor. He was a prominent breeder of Clydesdales and after a serious fall off a horse walked with a walking stick and special boot for the rest of his life. He was well-known for his interest in cars, horse-racing and politics. Mrs Nixon (Emily)was the first Red Cross president during WW1. Kiewa is a country town located on the Kiewa River. The hotel was built to supply the local people and those beyond with goods. The hotel continued operating until the 1970s.The town, Kiewa, is in the Kiewa Vally. Lawson's store was a busy place in the 1860s supplying goods to settlements up the river valleys. The Kiewa Post Office opened in 1871. Both businesses continued to operate as the town grew, the post office still providing a service to the local community.Black and white photo of C. A. Dudley House at 60 View St, Bendigo was built by builders, Gretchen and Cooper for the public Works Department in 1858-59. It was originally built for the district surveyor, Richard Larritt, who designed the Bendigo street layout. Farmers from the Kiewa Valley drove their cattle up to the Bogong High Plains during summer. Each family had a lease and a hut to stay in. Pack horses were used to carry food and other necessary items for the men while they were away.The Ryder family farmed in the Kiewa Valley and had a grazing lease and hut on the Bogong High Plains where they droe their cattle during summer. Sir Archie Michaelis was born on 9 December 1889 in St Kilda and died on 22 April 1975. He married Claire Esther Hart on 14 January 1920. They had 3 daughters. He represented the electorate of St Kilda in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1 May 1932 to 1 0ctober 1952. He was Speaker of the house from 1950 to 1952. Before entering politics he worked with the family firm Michaelis Hallenstein and Co., leather merchants, from 1909. He also served in the Royal Field Artillery 1914-1919, in Egypt, Aden and Salonika. Other roles included: president of the St. Kilda Hebrew Congregation, a leading Orthodox synagogue in Melbourne; President Vic. branch 1945 and Chairman Patriotic Funds Council 1947-1951; President Vic. Jewish Advisory Board 1939-1940; Vice-president Kipling Society, London, and President Vic. branch; member English Public Schools Association, Vic. Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen; Vice-president Alfred Hospital 1935-1972; Patron St Kilda Welfare Organisation, Claire Esther Michaelis was born on 20 Jan 1893 and died on 8 October 1973.
