The initial Methodist Church at Long Gully was a slab hut and in 1855 the first brick building was erected. This was replaced in 1865 by a brick church designed by architects Vahland and Getzschmann. In 1877 the present church, designed by the same architects was built, with the 1865 building becoming the Sunday school. Author Fred Joyce Schonell was born 3 August 1900 in Perth to school master Edward William Schonell and Agnes Mary (nee Mawer). Following his graduation (B.A) from the University of Western Australia in 1925 and his marriage to Florence Eleanor de Bracey Waterman in 1926, Schonell was awarded the Hackett Scholarship. The scholarship allowed schonell to complete a Ph.D. on the diagnosis and remediation of spelling difficulties at King's College and the London Day Training College, University of London; having travelled to England in 1928. From 1933 to 1950, Schonell acted as a lecture and researcher at Goldsmith's College, was appointed Professor of education at the University of Swansea (1942) and at the University of Birmingham (1947). Schonell returned to Australia ub 1950 as the Foundation Professor of Education at the University of Queensland and acted as head of the University's education department. Following a stint as President of the Professional Board, Schonell was named the first full-time, salaried, Vice Chancellor of the University of Queensland in 1960. During his career, Schonell oversaw many research projects and authored many published works including "The Happy Venture Playbooks" (1939 onward) which were developed as teaching materials for English speaking students throughout the Commonwealth. Professor Fred J. Schonell was knighted in 1962. Sir Fred J. Schonell died 22 February 1969 from Hodgkin's disease at Indooroopilly. The Fred and Eleanor Schonell Educational Research Centre was named after the pair in 1967. Schonell was posthumously inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame in 2001. A 64 page children's book made from stapled thick paper and a cardboard, red stripped, cover in 1965. Rick AMOR (1948- ) Born Frankston, Victoria After completing a Certificate of Art at the Caulfield Institute of Art in 1865 Rick Amor studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne from 1966 to 1968. Amor has held over 60 solo exhibitions, and has worked in Barcelona, New York and London. In 1999 Rick Amor became the first official Australian war artist since the Vietnam War. He was appointed by the Australian War Memorial to document the devastated land in East Timor, and the reconstruction efforts of peacekeepers. Professor David Caro OAM was Chancellor of the University of Ballarat for two terms, between 1998 and 2004. His contributions to academia and science have recognised on a national and international global scale. His appointments include Officer in the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and Officer in the Order of Australia (AO). This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Pattie BEERENS (1962- ) Born Sunshine, Victoria Pattie Beerens was enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Ceramics at Federation University in 2018 after completing a Graduate Certificate Visual Art at the Victorian College of Arts, University of Melbourne in 2017.Artists' Statement: Red. Broken structure on its side supported with an unrecognisable form. It is cast from an electronics packaging carton. Triangular arrows piece the structure with a spider on either side. I created fertility spiders to protect the Minoan women from predators. I collected spiders as a child to ward off the bullies and, like the octopus, spiders have eight legs and a head and body. The stylised spiders reference links between the Minoan octopus and other symbols of fertility. The natural light elongates the form in a shadow reflection on the floor. The form is surrounded by black space. This piece took on an anger I felt on the day that [Malcolm] Turnbull was overthrown and materialises the bully-boy behaviour we were witnessing. What is most interesting about this piece is that I created it as a Minoan reflection. It dawned on me , when I had it ready for the kiln - on the day that Dutton challenged the Turnbull leadership, that my anger was both reflective and contemporary because nothing seemed to have changed. The State Electricity Commission Sub-Branch of the RSL convened a commemoration service for Sir John Monash on Sunday 16 April 1972, which took place at the equestrian statue of Monash at the Shrine. The MC was Legatee D.J. Simonson (President 1970 and great nephew of Sir John), who also laid a wreath on behalf of Melbourne Legacy, and the address was given by Dr. J.A.L. Matheson, Vice Chancellor of Monash University. Matheson spoke of the establishment of the University in 1958 and how appropriate it had been to name it after Monash, comparing the struggle to create a world class university with Monash's struggles on the Western Front. Appropriately Monash had been chairman of the constructing body of the Shrine. In 1923 he was approached to become the first President of Legacy, a position which he declined as he was heavily involved as the Chairman of the State Electricity Commission. Baker as a member of the Board of Management, discussing the Residences Review Sub-Committee Report of April 1972. (Cat. No. 01674). L/- Carter challenges many of the items in the report in quite an emphatic manner before offering his own recommendations in the first letter; not content with this lengthy letter, he revisits the matter only six days later and 'urges' the Board of Management to appoint a sub-committee to examine not only accommodation of problem children, but also whether Melbourne Legacy funds are being used in the most effective way. Report presented by the Steering Committee to the Board of Management dated 18 March 1975 with their recommendations for the future of Blamey House, Harelands and Stanhope. The Committee was chaired by Legatee A. Quayle and composed of Legatees J. Chancellor, H. Berg, H. Rodgers and E. Trebilcock. They noted that occupancy rates were falling (Appendix 'A') and it would not be economically viable to renovate the buildings. They recommended that: Harelands should be sold and Blamey House redeveloped for widows' accommodation, and that Stanhope should be modified for co-ed accommodation. Professor David Battersby, AM, PHD (Waikato), MHED (UNSW), Vice-Chancellor of University of Ballarat, now Federation University Australia, from July 2006 to 2016. Professor Battersby is a graduate with first class honours from the University of New South Wales and recipient of a Commonwealth Fellowship. He was awarded his PHD in the field of Sociology from the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Professor Battersby has been the recipient of numerous academic awards, including Commonwealth Relations Trust, and the Australian-Japan Foundation. He has been a Visiting Professor at universities in a number of countries and undertaken consultancies for UNESCO, OECD and a number of government agencies. Professor David Battersby was the Head of the Albury Wodonga Campus from 2000 to December 2003 and was also the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Charles Sturt University until 2006, when he took up his appointment at the University of Ballarat. Charles Sturt University has named its annual prize for leadership and good citizenship within the student body, in honour of Professor Battersby. For services to Tertiary Education as a Senior Academic and Administrator, Professor Battersby received the Order of Australia Medal in July 2015. Professor Battersby has served as a member of the Board of IDP Education Ltd, he recently stepped down as the Chair of Education Australia Limited. He is a Founding Chair of Regional Universities Network and Founding Chair of the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka. A Herald newspaper article titled 'Melbourne's First Christmas by John Lahey.' This is Lahey's account of the first year of settlement of Melbourne. Six people landed first in Melbourne - Mary Gilbert, the first white woman to land in Melbourne plus five men landed from Fawkner's boat in August 1835. Mary gave birth to the first white child born in Melbourne - John Port Phillip Gilbert. The trials and tribulations of the first settlers in Melbourne are outlined in this article. A newspaper article titled 'A wheel turns full circle. Amy Huxtable looks at the recent rebirth of Bendigo's wine industry.' Wine making was one of the main industries in Bendigo in the 1800s. Mr. Jean T. Deravin of Chateau Dore Vineyard was a skilled vigneron. In 1893 phylloxera was found in some vineyards and all vineyards were needlessly pulled out. A new era in wine making was begun in the 1970s. Mr. Deravin's great grandson Ivan Grose now has grapes back at Chateau Dore. In February 1971 a new era in Bendigo wine making began with grapes grown in Bendigo by Mr. Ron Andrew of Maiden Gully were first released as wine by Chateau Tahbilk and Matchett's. There are two photos in this article - a selection of the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon released on the 13/02/76 and a photo of Mr. Ron Andrews holding his first vintage. A Bendigo Advertiser newspaper article titled '1899 - 1977 - and still the heart of fire fighting - Bendigo Fire Station classified by the National Trust by Amy Huxtable.' This article is an historical account of the history of the Bendigo Fire Station since the foundation stone was laid in View Street on September 23, 1898 by the Hon. J. S. Sternberg, MLC. Prior to that from the 1850s fire fighting involved a bucket and a horse. With the laying of the foundation stone came the merger of the three central brigades to become one strong unit under one control. There are some historical photos included in the article. This book has been written by Walter Murdoch while he was living in Warrnambool in 1903. Walter Logie Forbes Murdoch (1874-1970) had a distinguished academic career and became Australia’s best-known essayist. He was a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and syndicated literary columns in many Australian newspapers. In 1901 Walter Murdoch came to Warrnambool going into partnership with James Scott, the proprietor of Warrnambool College. They bought out Warrnambool Grammar School previously run by John Stanley. When Scott retired Murdoch became the sole owner and headmaster of the school. While in Warrnambool Murdoch wrote the school history textbook ‘The Struggle for Freedom’ which covers British constitutional history and has chapters on Australian government at all levels, including the new Federal Government. In 1904 Murdoch left Warrnambool to take up a lecturing position in English at Melbourne University. He went on to become the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. During his lifetime Murdoch published over 40 works and he was knighted in 1964. This book is of major significance as it was written by the distinguished writer and academic Walter Murdoch whilst he was working in Warrnambool. The address at the end of the book’s Preface is ‘The College, Warrnambool’ and the date is ‘October 7th 1903’. The book sold 10,000 copies in its first year. This copy of the book ‘The Struggle for Freedom’ was owned by a member of the Goodall family, a name prominent in Warrnambool’s history. The stamp of the stationer Walter Davies shows that it was originally bought at a well-known local Warrnambool bookstore.This is a hard cover book of 248 pages. It has a dark red cover with black printed material and a Whitcombe and Tombs logo. The cover is torn near the spine and there is much foxing. The book contains a Preface, Contents pages, an Introductory chapter, 28 other chapters on the development of Government in Britain and the Federation of Australia and an Index.
