The PPL is also contemporaneous with the defeat of the Shearer's Strike (1891). The strike took place in 1891 when pastoralists wanted to reduce shearers' wages and bring in non-union workers at lower rates. The author, Julian Stuart, was one of the leaders of the shearers' strike and was jailed for three years with hard labour.
