Noted with Sword. This Japanese sword was received by 2/8th Australian Field Regiment at the surrender at Miri, Borneo in 1945. The Regiment served in the Middle East (1940-43) as part of the 9th Australian Division. It's final action was in Boreo, once again with 9th Division. A Japanese Officer's sword. Hasornate inlay of shell covered with flat braided cord. Flat braided strap with tassles -brown and blue- Top end of hilt is leather with gold guilt scrolling. Brass very ornate with lotus. Installed in the Westgarth Shopping Strip, the artworks include aerial, street level and inlaid pieces. The aerial installations consist of eight pairs of steel dragonfly wings. The street level series feature ten sculptural pieces of welded steel depicting enlarged body/skeletal parts of fauna that are indigenous to the area. The Australian Tramway Employees Association commissioned in 1915, a banner for use in marches or events. It was painted in 1916 by George Grant with its first public appearance at the Eight-Hour Day Diamond Jubilee on 10 April 1916, celebrating the 60th anniversary of the introduction of an eight-hour working day in Victoria. The reference gives a detailed history of the banner, it significance and the background to its painting. It is now held in the collection of Museums Victoria. The ATEA was the forerunner to the Australian Tramway and Motor Omnibus Employees' Association, now part of the Rail Tram and Bus Union. This photograph frame with its decorative dragon and bamboo shoots was typical of the early 1900's when photography was in the hands of the professional artist. It was in a period before the "instant" photo and required a dark room and processing liquids for development. It was therefor in a time when photographs were "shot" only at important events, be they family or public occasions. Good quality picture frames such as this item were a part of the "reverence" of photographs per se.This photograph frame holds and protects, part of a very significant occasion, the 90th birthday photograph of the matriarch of one of the founding families within the Kiewa Valley. The frame therefore has historical significance.This silver painted aluminium photograph frame has a glass front pane within a formed inlay and a formed inlay at the back. The anchor points, at the back, for securing toggles are in place but not the toggles. These toggles were installed to allow the photograph to be securely positioned within the correct alignment of the the frame.The metal front plate has seven rivets holding the cloth covered cardboard back frame to the metal front cover. The front part of the frame has sculptured dragon and wild bamboo shoots and is boarded with a plain border pattern. The back panel to secure the photo and hold the stabiliser flap is missing.
