Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures whilst he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall. After the war, the recreation hall paintings and all, was moved from the camp to the nearly town of Murchison and used as the RSL local dance hall for 50 years. When the hall was demolished the paintings were restored and framed by citizens of Murchison. The von Gruenewaldt murals presently hang in the David Jones Nursing home and other public buildings in Murchison.Photograph of caricature painted on mess hut wall. The envelope was sent to Mr S. Asboth at Camp 1 Tatura, dated 25 July 1946. Stefan Asboth was an internee in Camp 1. Stefan was an engineer and was working in Persia when the war broke out. Made by Hans Knorr, sculptor, ex Arandora Star and Dunera. He was interned in camp 1 Tatura Group and later in POW camp 13, when status for merchant seaman changed to POW. Hans was, postwar, well known sculptor of wood and metals in Victoria.Wood turned lamp stand and material shade with electrical cord and plug attached. Stand has circular base on 3 feet and coiled central stand. An account of the author's family background & early life, more particularly those events leading to their internment in Tatura, Victoria, Australia during World War 2. The author's parents (author Hermine Wedel, nee Strauss) were of German nationality & practicing as missionaries in New Guinea. Upon the outbreak of WW2, those German nationals were ordered to the coast by the Australian authorities and the men were transported to internment camps in Australia. The women remained behind, reporting regularly to the authorities, until they too were brought to camps in Australia at the end of 1941. They were eventually reunited in a family camp for internees, Camp 3 at Tatura, in 1943. They were released from the camp to work in Australia in 1947 and the family returned to New Guinea in 1949, and eventually went back to Germany.
