John Brack (1920-1999) Born AustraliaFramed, limited edition lithograph. Originally produced to be bound in a book by private press publisher Tate Adams. The suite of lithographs for the book was started by John Brack in September 1981 and finished and published in December 1982. The book was launched with a series of original conte drawings, from which the lithographs were based, in Realities Galleries, Melbourne. As such a high cost of production was involved in the binding of the book, only fifteen copies were originally bound for exhibition and sale at the show. Subsequent to this approximately another thirty copies were bound, making a total finished edition of fewer than fifty copies, far less than the anticipated 200. A number of the 50 hors commerce editions have been sold as individual plates through auctions and galleries. A number of sheets were recently discovered through the estate of Brack’s art dealer Rudy Komon (1908-1982). William FRATER (1890-1974) Born 31 January 1890 at Ochiltree Castle, near Linlithgow, Scotland Arrived Melbourne, Australia in September 1910 In a lecture on modern art in 1925, Frater stated the basic position from which the rest of his oeuvre stems: 'Copying nature is not an art; … to copy effects of light tends to destroy form and colour'. Frater gave aggressive leadership to the small group of modernists in the 1920s. His example, teaching, lecturing and crusty style of polemic did much to disrupt the academic style as the arbiter of pictorial values and to pioneer a change of taste in the community.His approach in the 1930s was markedly indebted to Cézanne, especially in the portraits which predominated until his retirement from stained-glass designing in 1940. The Keith Wingrove Trust conducts a competition among Australian artists, graphic designers and students for the production of Ex Libris Bookplates. The competition is called The Australian Bookplate Design Award. The purpose of the competition is to increase interest in and to attract publicity to the artistic value of bookplates. Although the competition is referred to as 'Australian' there is a category of award open to International artists. This bookplate was part of the 2013 Australian Bookplate Award. Wim Zwiers (b. 1922, Holland) Zwiers studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam from 1940 and graduated from there in 1944. Renowned as copper and wood engraver Zwiers became a teacher at an academy in Groningen. Zwiers has produced a few hundred bookplate. Around 1992 started to use the computer making ex-libris and other small graphics. Although he was not the first who started making computer exlibris, he surprised many by starting at age seventy. John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood. His initial searches were in Belgium and Holland. Michelle ZUCCOLO Born Orbost, Victoria Between 2004 and 2007 Michelle Zuccolo undertook a Master of Arts, (Visual Arts part-time by research) at the University of Ballarat (later Federation University Australia). Her BA (Fine Art) was awarded by the Victoria College of Art and Design, and she has a DipEd from Melbourne College of Advanced Education. He won the Art Gallery of Ballarat’s Minnie Crouch Prize for watercolour art in 1953 and 1956. He won the prestigious Archibald Prize in 1879 for his portrait of Phillip Adams.
