Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. Robin and Patricia Boyd, with their youngest daughter Suzy, were based in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the year. Boyd gave some lectures at MIT and he was also invited to give lectures at many other universities, allowing him to travel widely within the USA, especially on the East Coast. This gave him the opportunity to meet architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Eero Saarinen, Paul Rudolph and many others, and visit the offices of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, and places like Taliesin and the General Motors Technical Center Detroit. On the way home, the Boyds visited London, Berlin, Paris and Le Corbusier’s Ronchamp Chapel in France.Colour slide in a mount. The Lutheran School in Mackenzie Street was evidently also referred to as the 'German Penny School' because those who attended has to pay a penny per day. The original from which these negatives were produced belongs to Geoff Pedersen of Kamarooka, and was evidently taken in the late 1860's. Note the manse on the side and a portion of the church tower (built 1865) in the background. This German prayer book is representative of the devotional items used by German-speaking Lutheran or Catholic communities, especially those that settled in Victoria's Wimmera region. It would have been used for private prayer, reflection, and possibly church services. The elegant design and portability suggest it may have been given as a confirmation or communion gift, and such books were often treasured family possessions. These items played a significant role in maintaining religious and cultural identity among German-Australian settlers in communities like Natimuk during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Book of Common Prayer.A small, leather-bound German-language prayer book, rectangular in shape with a dark, possibly black or deep brown cover. The front is adorned with a gold-embossed Christian cross centred within a double-lined decorative border, also in gold. The book is compact and was likely intended for personal use, suitable for carrying to church or for daily devotional reading. The spine appears to be slightly worn, suggesting long-term use and handling. Leather bound prayer book, inscribed, in German.
