This object relates to Herbert Swain GREENING. He was born on 1/01/1891 in Ballarat, VIC. Herbert Greening was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.Brass colour medal hanging from a red, white and blue ribbon (in order left to right). The medal is in relief - a wreath is overlaying two crossed swords with a banner in the very centre that reads "1914-15". At the left, right and bottom of the wreath are triangular shapes, and a crown can be seen protruding from the very top that attaches to an eyelet through which the ribbon is fed. Also at the bottom of the wreath is the letter "C" with a "V" in the centre of it. The medal is also missing a fastening pin, so the material is fraying.Back of the medallion: "3292" / "PTE H.S. Floatation Bladder, B.F. Goodrich Co, 1939-45
This floatation bladder was made for survival whilst crossing rivers and streams. The device would have been inserted into clothing and the user would have blown air into the pipe. The pipe would have been folded in half and held in place to prevent air from escaping.Tough rectangular, flat, khaki coloured fabric and rubber bag. There is a rubber pipe at the top, right corner. There is a fabric flap at the base of this pipe which holds the pipe in a bent position. There are also inscriptions on the front/centre of the bag.The following inscriptions are at the front/cente of the bag, printed in red. The very last inscriptions ('M. Rectangular; khaki coloured; metallic zip that runs along two sides and the top; one outside pocket with press stud; carrying strap at back; two flaps both sides of strap with metal attachments for securing. Contents inside include shoe horn; pocket knife with two blades; two packaged large field first-aid dressings; two vials (in cardboard packaging) of Morphine Tartrate; one bottle of drinking water purifying tablets; one packet of 8 wound tablets; two packets sulfanilamide wound powder; one box 4” bandage compresses; one box eye dressing containing 3 cotton pads, 3 sets adhesive strips, 2 tubes boric acid ointment and 1 tube ointment; one packaged small first-aid dressing; one package containing two tubes of boric acid ointment. There is also a small piece of foil which was found deep inside the kit but it is unknown if it actually belonged here. Contents in outer pocket - one package containing ten iodine applicators; one package of adhesive 1” bandage gauze.On outside of kit - “Kit, First Aid Aeronatic U.S.” Underneath kit - red painted cross Pocket knife - Inscription on both sides with logo (M inside circle) “McEwan-Younger Ltd. WW2 General Service Respirator (GSR) Gas Mask WWII made in 1939 and the Canister was made 1941. Mask made of black rubber with glass eye slots with metal rims. Metal nost piece. Covered in khaki fabric. Elasticized straps to hold mask in place, with a tan circular cloth covered rubber tube that connects to the canister. ESCo Employee Hours Work Record book that has been used by an ESCo/SEC inspector, H. P. James as a record / note book for his personal collection or papers or journal titled "Out of the Past". Book sewn with string in 36 page sections, blank end papers, board covers with stipple paper out sides and Rexene cloth binding. Comprising plain paper end papers and 104 printed pages (52 leaves), with each sheet printed in black on feint ruled paper for recording the hours worked and other details of drivers and conductors employed by ESCo. Printed for daily use, with Day and date page headings - made out for the 1930's. Images: Book - i1 Inside front cover - i2 Members Certificate - i3 Has been used to gather mementos such as photos, articles, newspaper clippings, letters and other miscellaneous documents on Ballarat local history. Newspaper cuttings etc often have side notes written by Mr. James. Inside front cover has certificate recording Mr. James membership to the Ballarat Historical Society for 1940. Receipt signed by Edward Crimmins. Also a newspaper cutting on the cost of pensions to Lord Nelson's family. On facing page a photo of Queen Elizabeth, a printer colour cover or sheet about Walt Disney's "Pinocchio", a newspaper cutting regarding Father's Day and a black and white photograph of a young girl in a hospital carriage being pushed by a man. Pages numbered odd numbers only in the top right hand corner in pencil. Primary items are: 1 - Coloured cover to a writing tablet, titled "Australian Birds". Underlying this on the back of the writing tablet is two newspaper cuttings: the Ballarat Historical Society - reports on the 6th Annual meeting of the Society. 3 - Photo of the pattern Ballaarat Horse Tram company tram outside the Duncan and Fraser's Carriage Works in Adelaide with hand written notes underneath, including a sketch of a horse tram drivers seat - see Reg. Raheen is a 120 year old Victorian house owned by Richard and Jeanne Pratt. Mrs Jeanne Pratt commissioned the book and this copy was presented to Sue Barnett on a visit by members of the Boroondara Historical Societies.
