The 1956 Melbourne Olympics saw the rowing events held on Lake Wendouree Ballarat. This was only set of events held outside Melbourne Region. The Programme, lists the scoreboard abbreviations, the Games Committee, map of the course, Rowing events Committee and Council, Officials, each event, finalists, names position, previous winners, transport services, though did not include Ballarat trams and on the rear cover a simplified programme of events and a map and list of competition venues. Cover printed by Sands McDougall Pty Ltd Melbourne with text by Alex King & Sons Pty Ltd Ballarat. Two contestants of interest are Murray Riley and Mervyn Wood who came 3rd in the double sculls. Wood became the NSW police commissioner in 1977 and Riley was a corrupt NSW Policemen and after leaving the police force became highly involved in the Nugan Hand Bank which was highly involved in drug trafficing, and crime syndicates. The young lady holding the trophy is Poppy Doubaris nee Kallinikos. She was the captain of the Melbourne Olympic Athletic Club Netball Team. The team had won the tournament against the Sydney team in Sydney in 1952 - 53.The Olympic Athletic Club was a sporting and social club established in the 1940s for young Greeks. Young Ithacans participated in the various sporting teams and social and fundraising activities organised by the club. In 1956 television came to Australia, just in time for the Melbourne Olympics. Television sets were very expensive, they were comparable to buying a car. This television set was purchased in Wonthaggi in 1962. it originally had a 12ft long trailing antenna. Mr Ernie Baker of Farmers Lane, Orbost, set it up to receive Channel 12 (in black and white) with power generated from the Orbost Butter Factory.This item is an example of one of the first television sets to be used in Orbost.A television set in a wooden case (laminated ply). It has speakers on both sides and a picture tube protruding at the back. A photo of a Junior legatees assembled for the Annual Demonstration at the Melbourne Olympic Swimming Stadium. The year is not known but the Stadium was used between 1959 and 1962. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years such as gymnastics, swimming or dancing classes. It was part of providing activities and skills for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall.
