Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. Letter gives the history of the "Big Tree" at the heart of the University of Ballarat, Mount Helen. The seedling was planted in 1896 by Mrs Elizabeth Downing who lived on what was their farm. The land was purchased in 1966 as part of a site for the location of the new campus It was decided that the tree should remain as a central landmark.Letter typed on cream flecked paper - A4 size. Her special interests relate to the colonial era, to the history of Ballarat and its heritage conservation, and the significance and commemoration of the Eureka Stockade. This photo was taken in 1985. Alf Watson, a descendent of settlers of the district - the Smiths and the Yungs whose children attended this school, is standing to the right of the building. The history of Happy Valley State School 1863 The school opened as Lucky Woman's in 1863. The school was located in the Linton area, a small mining township. The first head teacher was Thomas Lea. 89 students had enrolled. 1883 The name of the school changed to Happy Valley. The brick school building was built in this period. 1920s Enrolment declined in the 1920s to around 10 students. 1932 Enrolment continued to decline and the school was closed. 1933 The school reopened briefly under head teacher Selina McFarlane. 1936 It closed again at some stage before reopening in 1936 under head teacher Maxwell Brown. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. The information for this book has been compiled by Shane Everard, the Springbank Football Club's historian. Early history took time to collect. Later years were easier. He has written many articles that have been published in the local newspapers. Shane worked at Ballarat School of Mines. He was wheelchair bound and worked in the disability sector. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. H F Deutscher Pty Ltd were the manufacturers of lawn mowers. They were at 711 Creswick Road, Ballarat but now are at 731 Creswick Road Wendouree. They have been making petrol mowers since the 1950s. Their history began when a golf club asked them to build a mower that was able to cut long grass. Since then they have produced many different models of hand and ride-on mowers.A4 booklet - 10 pages. The Ballarat Teachers' College was established after the Victorian State Government and the State Education Department decided to establish two provincial teachers' colleges, at Ballarat and Bendigo. On 04 May 1926 W.H. Ellwood (Principal), Miss A. Bouchier, and Mr A.B. Jones, welcomed the first enrolment of 61 students to undertake the one year course. In 1927 the College moved to the former Ballarat East Town Hall in Barkly Street, which was remodelled for their use. It closed in December 1931 due to the Great Depression. In 1946 Ballarat Teachers' College reopened and relocated to the Dana Street State School. It was originally planned to open as a women's college, for whom the residence at 130 Victoria Street was purchased, but the decision was made to admit resident men from Ballarat. Mr T.W. Turner was appointed as Principal in 1951 and directed the introduction of a two year course for the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate. The former one year course was terminated at the end of 1951. In 1958 the College was relocated to a custom built facility at Gillies Street, in close proximity to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Numbers increased with the introduction of the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate course under the guidance of Mary Egan. With the introduction of a three year Diploma Course in 1968 accommodation became cramped. The introduction of the Diploma of Teaching (Primary) led to the Trained Infant Teachers' Certificate being discontinued in 1969, and the end of the Trained Primary Teachers' Certificate in 1969. Secondary Art and Craft students began studies at Ballarat Teachers' College in 1969 under Mr Ted Doney. In 1971 Mr D. Watson was appointed Principal. The State College of Victoria was proclaimed by Order in Council on 24 July 1973, and Ballarat Teachers' College became a constituent college of the State College of Victoria, and was known as State College of Victoria, Ballarat. By 1975 the College moved to Mount Helen as part of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. Pre service teachers currently undertake their studies on the Mount Helen Campus of Federation University. The Ballarat phase of the battalion's history was formed as the Ballarat Volunteer Rifle Regiment on 9 August 1858 as a result of the Crimean War, coupled with the withdrawal of the British Army in 1857. Pedro J. Lemos was an educator and artist. He was also the editor of the School of Arts Magazine and Director of Stanford University Museum of Fine Arts. He was born in 1882 and died in 1954. This art portfolio contains ten periods of art history: Egyptian, Assyrian, Grecian, Roman, Byzantine, Romanesque, Saracenic, Gothic, Renaissance and Georgian. Some of the images are: The Temple of Luxor in Egypt, Temple of Zeus, the Arch of Titus, Gothic cathedral in Cologne, Assyrian furniture and weapons, Greek architectural decorations, Byzantine costumes, Renaissance weapons and household articles, plus much more. Blue, large, hard cover. Black tape edges and spine. Title is written in orange on front cover. Ribbon ties stitched to the edge of the cover used to close book by tying them together.
