Ski-Horizon is the official journal of the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs which began publication in 1949. The were 26 original member clubs which included Albury Ski Club, Bogong Ski Club, Myrtleford Ski Club, Tallangatta and District Ski Club and Wangaratta Ski Club. Two pioneers of Falls Creek, Tom Mitchell, M.L.A., and Martin Romuld were Vice-Presidents of the Federation.This Journal is significant because it documents the early development of skiing in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally. Dame Ivy Evelyn Annie Wedgwood, as Senator in the Federal Government, presented the Senate with Statistics of visits done by Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) Trained nurses (Sisters) showing their visits increased threefold in the four years from 1952-1956. She was Honorary Treasurer of the now named Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) for many years. Dame Ivy Evelyn Annie Wedgwood trained as an Accountant and worked as a Secretary before joining the Australian Women's National League which led her to be a founding member of the Liberal Party, and the Victorian Liberal Party's women's section. She became the first Victorian woman Senator in the Federal Government in December 1949 and served until mid 1971. She presented the Senate with Statistics of visits done by Melbourne District Nursing Society Sisters showing their visits increased threefold in the four years from 1952-1956, and stating that many patients would have been hospitalized without the visits from the Society. She strongly supported the Home Nursing Subsidy Bill in Parliament which was passed in 1956, and continued to work for health, welfare and disability issues as well as being an advocate for women's interests, including equal pay for equal work, during her time in Parliament. Over the years she was a specialist magistrate to the Children's Court of Victoria, a Justice of the Peace, served on the National Council of Women, and was president of the Women's Justice Association, as well as Honorary Treasurer of the now named Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS) for many years and the first President of the Australian Council of Domiciliary Nursing. In June 1967 she was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for 'distinguished services to Parliament and the community' and RDNS holds this award in its Archives. Following her retirement from Parliament she became President of the After-Care Hospital in 1972, and on the 24th of July 1975 after chairing a Board meeting she felt unwell and returned to her home in Toorak where she died, aged 78 years, later that evening.Black and white photograph showing Dame Ivy Wedgwood, who has short wavy dark hair; is wearing glasses and has a single string of pearls around her neck. Ski Pass for Axamer Lizum Resort in Austria for C. H. Bridgford
SKI TICKETS Before tows and lifts were introduced at Falls Creek, it could take skiers 20 minutes to climb to the Summit … but only TWO minutes to go back to the bottom. The arrival of tows, then chairlifts and T-bars changed the face of skiing forever. The first rope tow was constructed by Toni St. Elmo for the 1951 winter season. Bob Hymans installed a smaller tow for his guests at Skyline Lodge. Tows were still quite slow, so in 1956 Bob Hymans created his single chairlift. In 1958 the Village rope tow, designed by Albury engineer Jock Wilson, opened. It was financed by shareholders including Bill Griffith (Bowna Ski Club) and the Bridgford family (St. Trinian’s Ski Club). Several other tows followed including the Summit T-bar in 1961, built by Ron McCallum and operated by Alpine Developments Pty. Ltd. which was a company formed by C. H. (Bill) Bridgford. By 1982 Falls Creek was served by 16 different lifts or T-bars, all owned and operated by Alpine Developments (Holdings) Pty. Ltd. During the development of Falls Creek, different methods have been used to pay for the use of tows, lifts and T-bars … including metal tokens, single tickets, strips of tickets and season passes. The Falls Creek Historical Society Collection includes many examples of these items.This ski pass is significant because it was issued to a pioneer of the ski industry in Falls Creek, Victoria.A plastic covered ski pass for Axamer Lizum resort in Austria. It was issued to C. H. Bridgeford. in 1968. Charles (Bill) Bridgeford built a family lodge called St. Trinian's in the early 1950s. Bill had previously worked in the family shipping firm and had been Member for South Eastern in the Victorian Parliament. He became one of the shareholders in the Village rope tow which had been a failure partly because too many people had been involved. In 1960 Bridgeford approached Toni St. Elmo with an offer to buy the Nissen tow and Nissen Lodge which was accepted. With friends Geoff Henke and Ron McCallum, an engineer, he formed Alpine Developments (Holdings) Pty. Ltd. Ron had also been Lift Manager at Mt. Buller and together they acquired the Village rope tow and replaced it with a T-bar. They gained the franchise to operate all ski lifts and T-bars and later the Falls Creek Ski School. Alpine Developments (Holdings) Pty. Badge used during Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) campaigning in 1994-1995. The September 1994 ANF Victorian Branch newsletter, On The Record (OTR), includes an article reporting on the Branch's pursuit of a 8% wage increase for members. In this article, Belinda Morieson, Vic. Branch Secretary stated “this claim is fair and responsible. We are not asking for any more than to have our national professional pay rates respected”. The campaign continued into 1995. The April 1995 issue of OTR had an article titled, “[then Victorian Premier Jeff] Kennett Must Act on Nurses 8% Pay Claim”. It states, “the claim for an eight per cent wage increase is moving forward following the success of the industrial action taken by ANF members across the state”. A picture of this badge is included in the article. The ‘Nurses: Worth Every Cent of 8%’ campaign appeared to draw to a close between July 1995 and the end of 1995. An article from the August 1995 OTR entitled “Your 8%: Slow, But Moving” details the proceedings of the ANF’s claim. This historical information places the date of the badge's production and circulation as 1995.Circular red, white and blue plastic badge. The Housing Commission of Victoria (HCV) was established by the Victorian Government in 1938 after a public campaign for housing reform. After 1942 the HCV was responsible for developing regional and outer suburban housing estates where low-income families were located in proximity to expanding population areas and post-war industries. With greater funding and a severe housing shortage, the Commission's activities greatly expanded through the late 1940s into the 1950s. They began to build larger and larger estates of housing in the suburban fringes, as well as country towns The Housing Commission was largely responsible for the development of Wodonga up to 1973 and in 1975 was said to have built one-third of all homes in Wodonga, though many of these were handed to the Army. Criticism of the bureaucratic and undemocratic nature of the Commission and scandals over corruption in relation to housing developments in Melbourne's fringe areas resulted in the disbandment of the HCV and the formation of a Ministry of Housing in 1984. The work of the Housing Commission of Victoria allowed many people in Wodonga to acquire affordable housing and pay it off over time through monthly instalments. This booklet is of local and state significance as it is evidence of the role of the Victorian Government is providing access to affordable housing. It supported the development of Wodonga and the realisation of the "Australian dream" of home ownership.A small receipt book issued by the Housing Commission of Victoria to record payments and receipts for tenants who were purchasing their home through the Housing Commission. In the aftermath of World War 1, the Australian government aimed to raise 25 million pounds through the Second Peace Loan. Money raised was to be used for the repatriation and resettlement of former servicemen. Targets were set for money to be raised in each of the Australian states. This notice encouraged Victorians to help WWI returned servicemen through the purchase of peace bonds. It details the amount of interest a purchaser of a bond in the Second Peace Loan would receive after ten years. Set of five pamphlets of an industrial or public relations nature issued during the early to mid 1980's. .1 - "The Wage Freeze" - foolscap printed on yellow paper, issued by the ATMOEA Vic Branch May 1983. .2 - "Public Transport: You pay more for less" - change of services, staff cuts, safety, Fuel conservation and what should be done - issued by the North Fitzroy Tramways Depot Committee and notes a meeting on Monday 17 September - (1984 by calendar check) - foolscap printed both sides on white paper. .3 - "$440,000 tram stripped for spare parts" - tram Z137, stripped - duplicated on blue quarto paper, issued by "concerned tramway workers" . Notes the tram had entered service in 1980 and had been stored for some time. .4 - "Open letter to passengers of Melbourne Tramway System" - complaining about the shortage of crews at Kew Depot - and asking people to register a complaint with the Minister Peter Spyker. Issued by "concerned Kew tram workers" - printed on blue A4 paper. .5 - "They are going to sell off Public Transport:" - ATMOEA - signed by Jim Harper - about the forthcoming 1 Oct. 1988 state election, asking readers to put the Liberals last. Booklet - 38 pages, printed on off white page, centre stapled, titled "Directory and Tramway Guide issued by the Hawthorn Tramways Trust", specifically advertising Wattle Park and showing Princes Bridge and the Yarra on the front cover and a photo of Hawthorn depot on the rear cover. Gives details of Wattle Park, its opening, many photos, members of the Trust, Engineer and Manager and Acting Secretary, Stopping points for the round and fares to Wattle Park, section fares, maps of the tram routes and connections with other tramways and railway stations. Has timetables for Burnley and other major points, special and emergency services, the coloured lights used on the trams, and a map for land sales at Riversdale Heights estate. Advertisements for Mutual stores, Melbourne Electric Supply Co., Moule, Hamilton and Kindle for the sale of land at Riversdale Heights and a map showing the estate location. Both copies have alterations or corrections to the route signage letters - marked in red - from the Minutes of the HTT Board meetings, the Trust were not happy with the finished product and was reluctant to pay for them - see Minutes of Meeting No. 99 of 5-7-1918. Ephemera - Set of 8 tram transfer or check tickets, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 1920s and 1930s
Passengers could often transfer from one service to another - eg changing from a tram to a bus, without having to pay a second fare. A transfer ticket would be issued on request and this along with the original fare ticket would be shown to the conductor or bus driver at the time of transfer. Check tickets would be issued by a conductor to record that the person had shown a periodical eg scholars ticket. This enabled passenger counting as well. Letter issued on PTC Coloured letterhead, with V/Line and The Met logos on the base, to all tram and bus employees, from Keith Fitzmaurice, discussing pay opportunities, the Tramways Union refusal to participate, Christmas Wishes and looking forward to work together in 1990. Undated as such. Consists of two sheets of paper and two tickets stapled together in the top left hand corner. Attached to the letter is a sheet giving current and proposed pay rates for bus drivers, conductors and tram drivers. One page document 'Extract from Dickers Mining Record, Strength of ropes Vol.1, No. 5, March 1862, page 3, 'Square the circumference in inches, and multiply by 200. The product is the weight in pounds the rope will bear in safety' Also, 'A question of some importance to miners'. A co-operative company had agreed that every shareholder working in the mine of the Great Redan Extended Coy shall bring two suits of clothes before he be allowed to work in the mine and shall proceed to the shifting room allotted to him and then shall put on his working clothes and on leaving work shall proceed to the shanty, and there change his clothes, and permit the officer appointed by the company to search the clothes in which he shall have worked. Any person not complying with this rule shall have a man work in his place and such person shall not be allowed to go down below. The wages of the man shall be deducted from the dividends of the shareholder. When taken to court, his Honor ruled in Favour of the company. Each party to pay his own costs. He said that all classes when going through the Custon's Houses had to submit for the general good. Military Payment Certificates (MPC) were an accepted form of payment on military bases but could generally not be used to buy local goods or services. When American officials believed that a series of MPC was being used fraudulently on the black market, a new series would be released, making the previous version worthless. Only those authorised to have MPC on a Conversion Day were able to convert them to the newly issued notes. Five Military payment certificates.
