According to the donor, Fr Fitzpatrick is the priest on the RHS of the Communion group.This is one of a series of photos that document John Turnbull’s First Communion. They are representative of this important rite of passage in the Catholic Church in the 1950s. The sacrament of First Communion is an important tradition for Catholic families and individuals. Originally this was celebrated when a child was 10, 12 or even 14 years of age, however in 1910, Pope Pius X issued the decree Quam singulari, which changed the age at which First Communion is taken to 7 years old. Traditions of celebration surrounding First Communion usually include family gatherings and parties to celebrate the event. The first communicant wears special clothing. The clothing is often white to symbolize purity. It is more elaborate for girls but boys wear ‘Sunday best’; it could be a suit and tie or even a tuxedo. Many families have formal professional photographs taken in addition to candid snapshots in order to commemorate the event and some churches arrange for a professional photographer to attend after the ceremony. A black and white photo of 16 visible boys (plus one additional boy almost completely obscured to the right of the group), 23 girls and 2 priests. The boys are wearing shorts and white shirts with ties. The girls are wearing white dresses and veils. The children are grouped with 12 boys in the back row and 4 kneeling in the front. The girls are in the front and centre rows and the priests are either side of the group. Behind the group is a large cypress tree and to either side the church and (?) school building. One of the boys is John Turnbull. The railway extended through to Mont Albert in 1882, but it wasn't until 1890 that a station was built with funds raised by a syndicate of local landowners.The buildings on the south side of the railway were built in 1910-1911 in the Arts and Crafts style by architect, K W Hardy. The land occupied by the Hamilton Street shops was subdivided in the 1880s and the first purpose-built shop was 'Pope and Moran, Grocers'. This shop later became Tom Morris' Grocery. By 1930 shops stretched along both sides of Hamilton Street and part way along Churchill Street. The donor, the late Norman Carter held a significant collection of photos taken around Mont Albert and Surrey Hills, in particular subjects related to the Church of England.Black and white photo taken from the centre of the road in Churchill Street, Mont Albert. Mont Albert station is on the RHS fenced off by a post and rail fence. Shops can be seen at the intersection of Hamilton and Churchill Streets. There do not appear to be any shops in Churchill Street. There are newly planted street trees within paling guards on the LHS. The land occupied by the Hamilton Street shops was subdivided in the 1880s and the first purpose-built shop was 'Pope and Moran, Grocers'. This shop later became Tom Morris' Grocery. By 1930 shops stretched along both sides of Hamilton Street and part way along Churchill Street. The donor the late Norman Carter took many photos documenting Mont Albert and Surrey Hills from the 1920s. Three single storey shops can be seen with vacant blocks of land in between them. J. R. Pope officially began operating his pharmacy at 102 High Street, Wodonga on 1 October 1967. The pharmacy was purchased from John T. McSwiney who had operated his business from the same site from 1901. Mr. McSwiney was born in Chiltern in 1875 and qualified as a pharmacist in 1896 when he was apprenticed to David James McEwen, father of future Prime Minister Sir John McEwen. By October 1901 Mr. McSwiney was running his own business in High Street where he practised until he sold the business to J. R. Pope exactly 66 years later. Although he went into semi-retirement John McSwiney was still working at the age of 92 and was considered to be Victoria’s – if not Australia’s oldest practising chemist. These jars were part of the transfer of the pharmacy and its equipment in 1967 but date back to the earlier years of John McSwiney’s pharmacy in the early 1900s. These jars come from a Wodonga business which operated for over 70 years.A set of 9 blue and white lidded apothecary jars with gilt lettering depicting latin names of the contents. Also a mortar and and two pestles. The mortar has a groove on the side for the smaller pestle to rest. Set of 10 documents about the industrial action of early 1990, that resulted in the tram blockade. .1 - Letter from K. Fitzmaurice dated 30-11-1989 - titled "A New Deal for Tram Drivers", one page, regarding the phasing out of the tram conductors and increase in wages. .2 - ditto, dated 2/1/1990, two pages regarding the unauthorised use of a Met vehicle - occurred the previous day. .3 - Letter from Jim Kennan (Minister for Transport) and Neil Pope (Minister for Labour) - dated 4/1/1990, on Victoria Transport Letterhead, giving a guarantee to conductors. .4 - Letter from K. Fitzmaurice dated 9-1-1990 - one page regarding their future jobs and the impacts of Met Ticket and improved rates of pay. .5 - Advert in The Age, Full page 11/1/1990 - to all tram and bus crews - regarding Job Guarantee. .6 - Letter from K. Fitzmaurice dated 17-1-1990 - seven pages regarding - headed Government return to work proposal. Gives the proposals placed before the unions about Conductors and Met Tickets. .7 - Instruction to crews at Camberwell Depot dated 26/1/1990, 5 sheets stapled in top left hand corner, about the pending introduction of one person trams and the relevant instructions. Headed "Notice to One-person tram operations" .8 - Letter from K. Fitzmaurice dated 1/2/1990 - one page - "Return to Work Proposal" on PTC letterhead giving a summary of the agreement with the union. .9 - Letter from Ian Stoney Chief Executive of the PTC dated 29/5/1990 address to Carolyn Dean, regarding a review of one-person operation. .10 - One sheet - titled "pay structure - tram and bus" - gives the existing and proposed rates - not dated.
