The first meeting of the 1st Bendigo Guides was held by Miss Merle Bush on the 22nd of August 1922 in the St Paul' School Room. Twelve girls were present. Miss Bush was given permission to open the Company by Miss R. From John's letter: 'Dad always dreamed of a team in the Bendigo League. Called some influential citizens and called a meeting at GS Fire Brigade which resulted in team being formed. Photo of Joseph Post. Bertha Jorgensen It is a notable occasion for music lovers when Melbourne's esteemed 'First Lady' of the Orchestra steps out of her place as leader and is heard as soloist. Bertha Jorgensen gave her first public performance as a five year old prodigy in Castlemaine, where she then lived, and a few years later she began travelling each week the 60 miles to Melbourne for lessons with Alberto Zelman, Junior. At fifteen, still adorned with pigtail, she came to Melbourne with her family and joined his orchestra. Since then Miss Jorgensen has been constantly engaged in orchestral work, and in attaining the exacting role of leader of the Melbourne Symphony is holder of a unique position. No other major orchestra in the world is led by a woman, and many are the evidences of amazement expressed by visiting conductors. Large cream & green certificate awarded to K. Foster & H. Skewes for 2nd prize in the under 16 Piano Duet at the Eaglehawk Branch A. N. A. Annual Competitions in 1906. No. 10 is printed on the bottom left corner. Certificate has Australian Coat of Arms at the top and a lady playing a harp at the bottom. Beside her is a broad leaf plant and Music printed under it. On the right is a lady holding an artist's board. She is standing on a pedestal with Art engraved on it. On the left is a man holding a scroll. He is standing on a pedestal with Oratory engraved on it. All three people are wearing Roman type garments. Certificate is decorated with a geographic border, leaves & scroll work.
