The King's Banners 1904 and 1920 were presented to the 8th Light Horse Regiment for Service in the Boer War and World War One. They were placed in Benalla Holy Trinity Church on unknown date. They were found in a cupboard during renovations in 1976, placed in a specially constructed case and mounted on the wall of the foyer of the Church. Warrant Officer Henry Whitty, a native of Tocumwal, enlisted at Cobram 2/1/1915 and was allocated to 13th Light Horse Regiment with Regt No 509. In France he was seconded to HQ 2nd Division and later transferred to Anzac Provost Corps with the Regt No 71. He was Mentioned in Dispatches in 1918 and awarded the Meritorious Service Medal in 1919. The Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct (Military) is a medal awarded to regular members of the armed forces. It was instituted by King George V in 1930 and replaced the Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal as well as the Permanent Forces of the Empire Beyond the Seas Medal. The medal was originally awarded to Regular Army warrant officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the UK Armed Forces. It also had a number of territorial versions for the Permanent Forces of the British Dominions. The eligibility criteria were relaxed in 1947 to also allow the award of the medal to officers who had served a minimum period in the ranks before being commissioned. The silver or bronze medal was awarded to officers and men of the British and Imperial Forces who either entered a theatre of war or entered service overseas between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918 inclusive. This was later extended to services in Russia, Siberia and some other areas in 1919 and 1920. Approximately 6.5 million British War Medals were issued. Approximately 6.4 million of these were the silver versions of this medal. Around 110,000 of a bronze version were issued mainly to Chinese, Maltese and Indian Labour Corps.
