Special issue of the Rutherglen Sun to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Rutherglen Shire. This issue may be one of the few available, as it does not appear to have been included in the bound copies of the Rutherglen Sun held by the State Library of Victoria, from which microfilm copies of these papers were produced. The Rutherglen Historical Society has scanned this issue so that the digital copy may be used for reference, and the paper copy carefully preserved.Single issue of newspaper, The Rutherglen Sun and Chiltern Valley Advertiser, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Rutherglen Shire. The main section of the paper consists of 8 pages covering the shire council and Rutherglen itself at the time of publication. Caption reads: "This is the Rutherglen police station, which was described as a 'disgrace' at Rutherglen Shire Council's meeting last Friday. Walls of the tiny station are riddled with white ants and the two lock-ups at the rear are primitive. The station is said to be more than 80 years old and entirely out of character with its surroundings -- the pleasant civic square. The condition of the buildings will be brought to the attention of the Victorian Police Commissioner and Public Works Department." The two lock-ups mentioned are now (2018) property of the Rutherglen Historical Society, and are located at the back of the Museum awaiting renovations to make them into a display.Black and white photocopy, that seems to have been from a newspaper article, showing a photograph of a small cottage that served as a police station in Rutherglen for some years. This photograph depicts the Great Southern Mine located in Rutherglen as it was during the 1900. After the initial Gold Rush of 1853-1854, Gold was discovered deeper under the surface of the earth in the 1860 after the discovery of another deep lead system. Due to the discovery of Gold in Rutherglen, Rutherglen developed into a community in its own right, possessing a population of 6600 by December 1860 and developed into a municipality in 1862. The Great Southern Mine depicted in this photograph required the use of a range of modern technologies, including the hydraulic pumps, in order to reach gold. This photo depicts the mining operations as they were undertaken around the turn of the century.The search for gold is ingrained into the history of Victoria and therefore, images like this one which portray a modern mining operation undertaken in the 1860s, can reveal important information for society and technology for the date when the photograph was taken. This image is of important historical significance for its ability to convey information about the methods used to extract gold in 1900. It is significant as most mining operations around the region, particularly earlier on in the period, used different technologies such as water races. This image is important for current research into the history of Rutherglen more generally, a town which developed singlehandedly due to the discovery of minerals and mining, as depicted here in this photograph, thus indicating an element of social significance as well as historic.
