The splitter's axe was used to cleave timber apart into shingles or palings. A timber handle or haft would have been inserted through the socket. The cast iron blade was placed vertically into the timber end. The blade was then driven into the timber with a rough mallet while the haft was used to guide the split along the grain. As the timber split, the haft could be twisted to lever the two pieces apart. This tool is sometimes called a froe or frow.Machine made, painted black, cast. No handle. Shows signs of use. This is a photograph of one of the many stone ruins of buildings which can be seen in the Sunbury district and surrounding areas. This series of 13 photographs show various views of one of the remaining uninhabited stone cottages which were built in the early days of the district's settlement.A coloured photograph of a stone cottage with a wooden shingle roof and its weatherboard and corrugated iron out building. A valley between two sections of the building suggests it has been built in stages. Three chimneys are visible and the cottage has three 12 paned sash windows with a doorway in the centre of the front. The walls are made of logs, the gable ends have wooden shingles, and there is a more recent tin roof with the original shingle roof underneath the tin. There is a verandah on the downhill side of the house. Trees surround the house. The house is opposite Kerrs Park and is believed to be the oldest house left in Narre Warren East.

Built in 1861 on the south side of Symonds Street opposite Irvine Crescent this building was the home of John Hicks Petty. He operated the first Post Office in Yarra Flats from here. Mr Petty, holding a baby, is standing alongside his wife Maria Louisa Petty. The cottage is built of sawn timber, placed vertically, and a shingle roof. The Carisbrook Police Lockup, originally known as the Loddon Punt, was opened in 1851. At that time it was part of the Castlemaine Police District. Standing in the park beside Bucknall Street it is the town's one significant historic building. It was originally built on the police paddock adjacent to the primary school and moved to its present site in 1886. The walls are made of interlocking horizontally-laid logs. The shingle roof has been replaced with corrugated iron. This is the home of Ernest Lance Young and Beryl Mair and the childhood home of their children Barbara, Ken and Laurie. Lance was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills, the son of Ernest Augustus Young and Ruby Nichell Whitby. He married Beryl Mair in 1939 and died on 5 October 1999 at Mont Albert. Electoral rolls list him as a manufacturer. His address after marriage was 11 York Street, Mont Albert. He is buried in Box Hill Cemetery (M-*-0867) along with his father. He served in WW2 (Service Number - VX104733 enlisting at St Kilda) and after returning took over his father's business. The Mair family were resident in Barton Street for several generations. Beryl's father Dave Mair was a keen sportsman and founder of the Kangaroo Social Club of cricketers. This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families. Thomas Briggs was a pioneer of the Tawonga District. He worked on his parent's farm, selling goods, droving pigs and travelling to Yackandandah and Bright. He worked with pick and shovel on the Tawonga to Bright Road in 1902. He took up 320 acres of wild forest in Tawonga at 10 cents per acre per year for 20 years. He built a slab and shingle hut and a boundary fence. In 1886 he married Annie Maria Platt parenting 5 sons and 2 daughters until Annie died in 1953, aged 86 years.Thomas Briggs was a pioneer living in the Kiewa Valley with his parents and then with wife and family. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. The house in the image is located at 82 Main Street Bacchus Marsh and as of 2024 is still occupied as a residence. The house was built in 1860 by William Watson for William Grant who leased the property to various tenants. From 1867 it was mainly leased to local doctors. The property stayed in possession of the Grant family for many years after this and was leased to many residents of Bacchus Marsh. Transportation of goods and material by bullock teams was a common feature of life in nineteenth century Australia. Bullock teams could comprise more than twenty bullocks to haul very large and heavy loads. They were the equivalent of large trucks on the roads of today. Many Australian country towns have very wide main streets to allow for large bullock teams to turn without having to unharness and reharness the animals. The bullock driver in this photo is thought to be of James Densley, aka Charlie (the ) Carter, who lived at Hopetoun, east of the township of Bacchus Marsh. He worked as a carrier with a bullock team in the later years of the nineteenth century. He had a reputation as a sober man who never used bad language. (Williams, W. John Simpson arrived in Bacchus Marsh around 1848. In 1850 he established a butchery business. He continued to operate this business in Main Street Bacchus Marsh until his death in 1890. His son John Simpson and one of his brothers, Edward took over the business and operated it until 1923. John Simpson the younger died in 1940 having lived all but a few months of his 92 years in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. Edward L. Simpson died in Corowa, NSW in 1937. The younger John Simpson's recollections of Bacchus Marsh in the 1850s to 1870s were published in the Bacchus Marsh Express on the 25 June 1932.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. This was dug up at the old station at Lochend owned by the Stirling family and abandoned in the early 1870's. James Stirling's son Thomas Telfer Stirling took up the Corringle Run stretching from Lake Tyers along the coast. The home was at the Old Station. When he moved to Bruthen, James Stirling took over the Corringle Station. He is buried in the Marlo cemetery. He built a bark hut on the bluff that had two rooms, bark walls, earthen floors and a shingle roof. By 1884, this structure had expanded to a 9 roomed accommodation house and in 1886 became the Marlo Hotel when a liquor license was granted. info. from Personalities and Stories of the Early Orbost District by Mary Gilbert.
