The Wangaratta Tin Kan Band, a significant part of local folklore, was formed mainly for the purpose of raining funds for the district hospital. The original drum was a discarded carbine tin, hence the band's name Tin Kan Band. The band was formed in 1914 by Syn Emery and was active until 1935. Music was important in this era for public and social functions. The instruments played were tin whistles, mouth organs, accordions, banjos, violins, guitars, drums, wash boards and anything that would make a musical sound; they often made their own instruments such as one string fiddles. Each band member had their own distinctive costume. The band members were mostly business men and shop owners who used their talents to entertain at public functions. They organized sports meetings, dances, concerts and anything that would help the hospital financially and in the depression of the 1930's; they were the mainstay that helped keep the hospital going. This item has np known provenance but is a beautiful example of a woman's evening cape dating from the second half of the 19th century. The original owner would have been a lady of considerable means who attended social functions requiring an item such as this.This item is retained as a fine example of 19th century woman's clothing.This is woman's cape made of black lace and patterned satin with satin rouches and black beaded rosettes around the shoulders and the front. The beading has long tassels. The cape is knee length. It has grey lining around the inside of the shoulders. Nikolaos Paizis and Stathi Raftopoulos photographed by the Yarra River in Kew. Both men were much loved poets in Melbourne's Ithacan community and would be called upon to recite at various social functions. The Mission to Seafarers held many social functions to raise funds for the work of the organisation and to benefit visiting seafarers. Many dances were held on a Saturday with good attendance. On the pillar on the left of the stage there is a photograph of a monarch, possibly King George VI, thereby dating the photograph at pre-1953.The Mission to Seafarers as an organisation is dedicated to not only providing spiritual and practical support to seafarers, but has long found it important to provide social opportunities as well. This album is possibly a collection printed from newspaper files. It has a wide variety of local scenes from haymaking, sports, social functions, beach scenes. Some names have been written in greylead, identifying some of the people in the photos and others are recognizable backgrounds such as the Peterborough Golf ClubWhile these images are not of true photographic quality, they do provide images of local scenes and activities which were relevant to the area in the mid 20th century. L.J. Barelli delivered bread to the local Mitcham residents by horse and buggy. He also advertised as a caterer for weddings and social functions. He had another bakery in Blackburn (1930 information). L.J. The young men were photographed as a social function. Two are dressed in dinner suits, with a small flower in their lapels which suggests they were possibly part of a wedding party. Attending an Ithacan social function, the lady standing, dressed in blue, is Sia Athanitis-Andrews and to her left is Irini Varvarigos-Sikiotis. Sia and Irini were first cousins; their mothers, Ekaterini Athanitis and Giannoula Varvarigos (nee Lekatsas) were sisters. In 1991 Sia was the first woman to be elected as President of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. The function was a cabaret dance held on the 11th May 1954 and organised by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. Initially men could only join the society so the women formed an auxiliary committee. They organised the social functions for the society. The building is the former Greenvale State School No. 890. Although a school had been functioning at Greenvale since 1870. This is a photo of the school building that was renovated in 1926. At weekends the building was often used for family gatherings and social functions in the district. As the area became developed and changed from a country settlement to a suburb, the school was relocated to a new building closer to the new housing development. The existing building became a community centre. Social functions were organised by the Ithacan Philanthropic Society at their club rooms from the early days of the club's inception. These functions were well attended and gave Ithacans a chance to relax and socialise away from their businesses and workplaces. During the 50s and 60s 'Tuesday night dances' were a regular event . They were held on Tuesday evenings as there was no market for fruiterers on Wednesday mornings. The couple on the dance floor are Arthur Papanikolaou and Mary Bouris. The building is the Bulla Community Centre, which replaced an older hall that was situated in the Bulla Sports Ground precinct in Greene Street. The picture is of a Greek dance group, possible organised by the Olympic Club. Nina Black pictured in the middle row was an Australian born Ithacan who was very active in a variety of Greek community activities, including the performing arts and education. She was passionate about fostering Greek culture and language within the Ithacan, Greek and wider Australian community in Melbourne. She went on to establish her Greek dancing classes which were popular with both the Greek and broader Australian community. Her Greek dance group performed Greek dances at many social functions and dressed in traditional Greek costumes, the performances added colour to the events and were widely appreciated.
