Proceedings were opened in the Visitors' Centre by Barbara Rogalski whose father had catered for the Cottage opening in 1965. Rosalie Whalen (nee Schwerkolt) spoke about her early years in the area, after which the group walked to the cottage where a plaque was unveiled and a tree planted. William Dower took up 10 acres at Mt Dandenong in 1898. He secured a property known as Cambridge Gardens which was located between the present Mt Dandenong Tourist Road and Yarrabee Road. William and his wife Elizabeth had seven sons (Will, Harry, Bert, Walter, Joe, Edgar and Robert) and four daughters (Emmy, May, Ada and Ruby). There was a two room slab hut on the property when they took possession and they added another five rooms using trees from the property. The Pig and Whistle Tea Rooms referred to in the inscription is now Tatra Hut. 1907 photoghraph of Eliza Hand (Grandma Hand), Florence Hand (Aunt Florrie) and little Gert on the verandah of the Beulah Tea Rooms at FiveWays (The Gap). This photograph has a detailed inscription on the back handwritten by John Lundy-Clarke in 1974.1907. Eliza Hand on the verandah of her shop at Kalorama gap with her daughter Florence. Opened as "Beulah Tearooms" it was made a post office in 1909 and Florence Hand became post mistress. It remained active till 1923 when, the building having been sold to Miss McPhee she built the Fiveways store alongside and moved the post office to another room. The verandah was pulled down but the room is still there (1974) facing Ridge Road at the west end of the complex. Eliza died 1918. Straw container, original to the Cafe, which supplied afternoon teas and suppers to casual visitors and Chalet guests. Spiders and milkshakes were popular with yung guests after evening tournaments, films and concerts. 'When the Victorian railways took over managemen of the Chalet from 1 october 1924, they ran their dining room and cafe in similar fashion to the dining cars on their trains and refreshment rooms on their stations, using the same ceramic hotel-ware and electro plated nickel silverware (EPNS), all made to order items that are clearly idenitified by the distinctive 'VR' monogram. The Chalet retains a good selection of of the diverse range of EPNS item formerly used in the dining room..- which in all theoir variety and function help to interpret the dining room protocols of the 'tourist house' and the service provied by the Victorian Railways refreshment and Services Branch. Coffee Palaces were developed throughout Australia with the backing of the Temperance Movement as an alternative venue to pubs in the late 19th century. Two Coffee Palaces identified in Wodonga in the early days were the Railway Coffee Palace and the Wodonga Coffee Palace. In 1908 Wodonga Coffee Palace was advertised for sale, having 15 rooms, a 15 stall stable and feed-room. In 1921 Wodonga Coffee Palace was taken over by Julia Ronan who had successfully conducted the dining rooms at the Wodonga Sale-yards for 15 years. The building of the Hume Weir was in progress and many of the workers boarded at the Coffee Palace. In 1936 Wodonga Coffee Palace became “Glenburnie” Guest House. Mr. Loftus Henry Moran, born in Winchelsea, Victoria, was well-known in the tea trade, originally working with Griffiths Bros Ltd. He started his own business, Loftus Moran Pty Ltd in 1909. Loftus Moran's company imported chinaware from Britain and sold it into the Australian market. They specialised in supplying to hotels, businesses and institutions.This bowl is an excellent example of earthen ware items used throughout Australia in hotels, cafes and other institutions. Loftus Moran Pty Ltd, was a major distributor and successful Melbourne Company. Presumed that the tea service was donated back to Legacy by the Widow's family at some stage.
