John Rowe began his teaching career at Orbost and Jarrahmond in 1886, a career which continued at Orbost until 1908 when he retired due to ill health. He began teaching at Orbost, (initially part-time with Jarrahmond) on 10th May 1886, following the very short tenure of the first appointee, Campbell MacKay. J D Kestner manufactured the Hilda doll from 1914. They ceased business in 1938.J D Krestner 'Hilda' baby doll with hard composite body, jointed arms and legs and porcelain head. She dates from post 1914. Her hair is short, blonde and 'frizzy'. She is wearing a cream pintucked linen dress trimmed with cream lace at the hem, sleeves and yoke. Underneath the dress is a cream cotton pintucked petticoat with a lace insert and lace trim at the hem. She has a yellow knitted singlet and knickers. This is a reference written on 14th October, 1942, by the Head of the Art Department at the School of Mines and Industries Bendigo, Ernest H. Duncan, for a former pupil, Miss Ivy Jack. It is a complimentary reference assuring 'To Whom it May Concern' that Miss Jack 'is a fine type of girl possessing many fine qualities...' and that she has '...proved herself an energetic, careful and reliable student with ability in Dressmaking above the average.'This is significant in relation to the history of the Bendigo School of Mines and Industries.
