The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. Frances Madge Killicoat enlisted on 5.11.15 in the Australian Army Nursing Service age 26 years, embarked for Eygpt 12.11.1915. Joins the B.E.F in Alexandria 26.3.1916, disembarks Marseilles 4.4.1916, hospital with Hay Fever 16.6.1917 later changed to Nasal Catarrh and then with Debility, rejoin unit 4.7.1917. From there she served in No 1 ACCS, 15 CCS and 10th SH. She was discharged from the AIF on her marriage to Capt S.O.Coen AAMC on 18.11.18. Sister Barbara Watson is an RDNS Liaison Officer and is meeting with Hospital staff and a patient in a Ward at the Alfred Hospital before the patient is discharged home where he will receive the nursing care required from a visiting RDNS Sister. Sr. Watson is wearing her RDNS winter uniform, which is a blue/grey skivvie worn under a V neck tunic style frock made of herringbone blue/grey winter material.Liaison had occurred between doctors and the Trained nurses (Nurses) of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), from its inception in 1885. This increased when Midwifery was introduced in August 1893 with close liaising with the Women’s Hospital. As District nursing grew it was recognized that closer liaising between many Public Hospitals would be beneficial, for not only the MDNS, later called Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Trained nurses (Sisters) but also for the patients and the hospitals. In August 1964 a Liaison Officer commenced at the Alfred Hospital. This soon increased to Liaison Officers working full time at several Public Hospitals. They facilitated the smooth transition from hospital to home for many patients who required ongoing nursing care. Liaison Sisters regularly attended discharge planning meetings, interviewed prospective patients, coordinated discharge and booked the first visit by the visiting RDNS District Sister. At the time of a patient’s discharge, the Liaison Sister forwarded information on their diagnosis and instructions regarding the care required at home to the appropriate RDNS Centre, and in turn the attending District Sister wrote a report of progress and any queries to the hospital Doctor, via the Liaison Sister, at the time the patient was attending outpatients. Any new instructions were then sent back to the District Sister. Sisters of Charity St Vincent de Paul. In 1638 St Vincents de Paul and Mademoiselle de Gras taught simple nursing procedure to young peasant women. They worked in the home hospital and battlefield. Their duties were arduous no pain relief was known and they were exposed to infection. The newspaper clipping reads: "Sister Enid of the Methodist Mission in Prahran has won this week's Bouquet for a Lady. And as the bouquet was given to her by the mission's superintendenet, Rev. Frank Hartley, she said, 'This is the biggest surprise I've ever had.' Sister Enid has been a mission sister for 23 years. As Miss Alice Blenkinsop she trained at Melbourne Central Mission, and later worked in the slums of Collingwood and at the Wesley Mission in Hobart. She has also been a court probation officer. On Thursdays Sister Enid runs the Friendship Club for elderly women and pensioners at Prahran. Children have a special place in her heart. 'We used to mother the poor little dears during the depression, take them on holidays and form clubs where they could be together,' she said. SISTER Gwen, of the Methodist Home Missions Department, visited Tallygaroopna West last Wednesday, and gave a most interesting illustrated talk. As well as showing some of the scenic beauties of Gippsland, the talk and lantern slides dealt with slum conditions in South Melbourne, and showed the Methodist home at Cheltenham. Sister Gwen is a sister of Rev. E. Lechte, a former minister in the Shepparton circuit.
