Established by local designer Ralph Samuel, Hartnell of Melbourne was one of the leading high-end Flinders Lane fashion houses of the 1950s and 1960s. This dress still has its original store tag attached, which tells us that it cost 39 pounds, 19 shillings and sixpence - a large amount of money to spend on a dress in 1952. Adjusted for inflation, this price tag equates to approximately $1,480 in today's money.Mauve tucked and folded cocktail dress with twin shoulder straps, ruched bodice and gathered skirt. Wedding veil and headpiece. Soft cream in colour, the fine soft tulle is embroidered with a continuous, curvaceous, chain stitched embroidered leaf design. The tulle has been cut to follow the curves of the embroidery.The three tier veil is tightly gathered onto a one cm band, which is stitched to a clear plastic, curved comb 8.5 cm long and which would hold in the hair of the bride. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. Clothing - MAGGIE BARBER COLLECTION: CREAM SILK AND TULLE VICTORIAN EMBROIDERED BODICE, Layte 1800's - early 1900
Clothing. Beautiful deep cream silk bodice, fully lined with cream tulle/net. Elbow length sleeves have a semi-circle of embroidered silk, and an embroidered tulle ''flounce'', edged with cream cord - 17 cms long. The bodice has seven pin-tucks, angled from the shoulder to the waistline on each side of the front and back. Between the pin-tucks at centre front panel is an extensive cream silk, floral embroidery. A rounded neckline at front and back, is in-filled with embroidered tulle - small 1 cm diameter flowers, in a 3 cm diameter circle, defined by 12 small (3mm) embroidered circles. The tulle infill extends to a 7 cm high stand-up collar-supported by seven plastic ''bones''. The collar also features the same, circular, floral embroidery, and is also edged at the throat with cream cording. The bodice while in good condition, has been cut at the hemline, and a 10.5 cm strip of fabric has been added but unfinished. 18 metal hooks, and hand-stitched loops fasten the back of the bodice. The company produced a line of small celluloid plastic dolls called Edi-puppets) between 1948 - 1960. The dolls were typically sold in costume though this one doesn't have original clothes. This doll was probably produced in about 1948-49. It is marked Edi 5/8 GERMANY. They produced girl and boy dolls.Small celluloid doll. Curly hair with blue shoes. The Kew Historical Society’s fashion and design collection is comprised of costumes, hats, shoes and personal accessories. Many of these items were purchased or handmade in Victoria; some locally in Kew. The extensive hat collection comprises items dating from the 1860s to the 1970s. While most of the hats in the collection were created by milliners for women, there are a number of early and important men’s hats in the collection. The headwear collection is particularly significant in that it includes the work of notable Australian and international milliners.A natural undyed straw woman’s hat with a rounded crown and a wide brim. At the base of the crown there are added decorative elements comprising silk rosebuds and leaves and a purple ribbon. The capelet was owned by Bridget Fitzgerald (nee Shannon) who emigrated to Australia from Ireland and subsequently lived in the Victorian country town of Tilden. Bridget died in about 1906 and is buried in the Kyneton cemetery. The capelet was passed on by descent to her granddaughter.Well-provenanced evening cape, worn by Bridget Fitzgerald in the Central Victorian Goldfields district.A black satin shoulder capelet covered with fine silk tulle, embroidered with jet passementerie and black sequins.
