Items for sale included home made food items like relish and jams, and craft items. Legacy House held craft lessons throughout the year and often the items made were sold at the fetes or at a stall outside Legacy House during Legacy Week for fundraising. Four Legacy widows enjoying themselves at a widow function as they join in a sing-along around a piano. It was the 'Great Tea Party' in June 1992 when the widows rooms were opened after 9 months of renovations. The pianist is Jean Davies and at the rear right is Vera Paydon (of the Homes and Hospital Visiting Group) and the other names are unknown. 30 min colour and sound 16mm film, severely faded, beginning with an interview with a Vietnam widow and going on to explain the help Sydney Legacy gave to bereaved families including outings, health, etc. Lionel Long, who was a Legacy ward, is interviewed and sings one of the ballads he was famous for in the 1960s. A Widow's Club meeting is shown and a party of the Northern Suburbs Progressive Twenties who raised money for Legacy. They were smoking, drinking, and eating what looks like cheerios and slices of bread in a large room hung with streamers and balloons and dancing to pop music. Junior Legatee Karen Miller was interviewed about her experience travelling to Switzerland to represent Australia at the Swiss Bank Centenary, Switzerland, with a boy from NSW, going on to stay with a Legacy family in London for a week. The functions of Legatees are explained as a Legatee is shown with one of his families. Also interviewed is a practising solicitor who attributes his qualification to the help he got from Legacy. Girls are shown rehearsing for their debutante presentation and the film segues to the actual presentation with the Governor Sir Roden Cutler, Governor of NSW, and his wife. The book details the first fifty years of Melbourne Legacy. The book was written by Mark Lyons. The foreword was written by Sir Roden Cutler V.C., K.C.M.G., K.C.V.O., C.B.E.. Governor of New South Wales. From the National Library of Australia's website: 'The first Legacy club was formed in Melbourne in 1923 by a group of young men who had served together in the Australian forces in World War I. They were all in business and sought to help other ex-soldiers in business. After two years, they changed their objectives, deciding henceforth Legacy would care for the widows and children of their war-time comrades. Legacy clubs were soon functioning in all states in Victoria. There are now 47 Legacy clubs within Australia and one in London. They have almost 7000 members and care for over 100,000 widows and children, on whom nearly $3 million is spent annually, all of it raised by public subscription. This study, commissioned by Legacy for its fiftieth anniversary, provides the first detailed history of this uniquely Australian organization. Legacy is firmly rooted in Australian society. Its members are all returned servicemen and share in that special ex-service tradition that began with Anzac. They belong to Australia's middle class. They help people generally less well off than they, but manage to do so without demeaning its recipients. This is a study of Melbourne Legacy by the author William Paul Healy, from April 1973 to March 1975. The author was interested because of the reputation gained by Legacy over the preceding 50 years, for successfully delivering welfare services by volunteers to widows and their dependant children. The aim of the study was to describe, analyse, explain and evaluate the work of Legacy. This has been done at great length and in summary the great value of Legacy is in the continuity of a Legatee with the one family i.e. the legatee maintained contact with the family through school, beginning work/university and other milestones in the life of a dependant family. It was thought that families in receipt of Legacy services functioned at a higher level than those who do not receive such services.Significant in that Legacy was seen as providing a high quality service.
