One damaged copy of 'Embers' vol. 1 No. 1 May, 1947. This is the first issue of news-sheet aimed at keeping students in tune with current events at the college. Added aims are for students to keep a record of their life at the college and for ex-students to keep in touch. Included is a photo of lecturer Mr. Duncan teaching a class and various contributions by college members. Attached to this, is a copy of 'Embers' Vol. 1 No. 2 Aug. 1947. Seven copies of 'Embers' magazines published in 1970(6 copies) and 1971. They include the red magazine titled 'Embers calendar 19.' This is an orientation edition for new students in 1970 and includes an introduction to the city of Bendigo. There is a Shakespeare themed edition which has an orange cover. Article (a): 'Carpet, Cushions to be dedicated' 'Mr Saunders, a descendant of explorer Captain James Cook, was a prominent Colac citizen until his death 18 months ago' The dedication to be performed at the Colac Wesley Church. Article (b) 'His Life was a life worth living', minister's tribute to late Mr. G.C. Saunders. George Saunders lived in 'Tintin Glen', Panton Street Golden Square, before he relocated to Colac. Robert Carr - correspondence to BHS and life history information sent back to writer re Carr (Great Extended Hustlers). Robert Carr was born Magherfelt Ulster 1833 and educated in agricultural pursuits. He arrived at Eaglehawk (part of Sandhurst) 4 miles from Bendigo in 1853 and began alluvial mining in 1855. Robert was on the committee to establish the Presbyterian Church at Eaglehawk. Robert began reef mining at Hustlers and Extended Hustlers mines and was manager in 1881. Robert was also a past Secretary of Oddfellows. In the years 1871-2 the mine yielded marvellous cakes of gold. He was a model mine manager. During 1872 he was on the committee of School of Mines. In the year 1873 he fell 60 feet down an abandoned shaft and not badly hurt. Robert died in May 1893, aged 60 years, and at the time of death was director of Great Extended Hustlers, Hustlers Company.
