Frank Hurley was a photographer and member of Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition. Former Principal of the Ballarat School of Mines, Richard W. Richards, was a member of this expedition. Peter Minko is a ceramic artist based in Bendigo, Victoria. His hand-thrown works using a fine porcelain body are usually a combination of burnished and bisque-fired ith hand-painted metallic oxides and sometimes fired a third time to apply gold or platinum to the design. He began potting in 1977 and has built a strong reputation as a porcelain artist, with work being commissioned by the Federal Government for official presentations and his designs being used by Australian Fine China for a range of dinnerware. Hand thrown, round body, footed and lidded vessel. Decorated directly onto the burnished porcelain surface. Checked gold and cream under pattern overlaid with a combination of decals and hand painted gum leaf and pink blossom design. Interior glazed with tenmoku glaze. Around the sails of the vessel are radiating yellow rays and a blue surrounds representing sunburst against blue sky. The top third of shield shows a pair of sheep heads against a red background. Above the shield is depicted a helmet, crowned with a whale. This card together with a log book was a vital record of service for any seaman serving on a Merchant vessel that had been commandeered for War transport work and needed to be validated to ensure eligibility to be taken on as qualified member of the crew. G.W. Duncan appears to have specialised in engine room and mechanical maintenance. He appears to have served aboard a number of vessels including merchant vessels commissioned into wartime service in WW2.Mariner Duncan had a particular regard for the Mission to Seafarers. This plate for display on a commissioned new table at the MTSV chapel acknowledges his bequest and the material donated. Collectively the G W Duncan material includes: photographs, professional data memorabilia and written and commercially printed resources.
