Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Photograph Farm Land, Kiewa, 25/8/38, circa 1938
This photograph was taken in august, 1938 some eight years prior to the establishment of Mt. Beauty as a township. The area was still being used for grazing cattle and the land was eventually acquired from the local land owners by the State Electricity Commission. The construction of the road, from Tawonga to the High Plains, was commenced in April of 1938. This allowed men and heavy equipment to be transported to the work sites for the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Prior to this access was by bridle trail, either on horse back or by foot. By 1946 housing construction had commenced for the new town of Mt. Beauty and by 1948 street construction in the southern part of the town was completed as far as Hill Street. This is an important photograph as it shows the upper Kiewa Valley and the site for Mt. Beauty as it was before the establishment of the town. The land has been cleared of natural vegetation and used for grazing cattle.Black and white photograph of farmland, cattle in the distance, hills in the backgroundHandwritten in the upper left hand corner, in black ink, 'Kiewa 25/8/38'. Photograph, Edward John Price 1973
John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the district working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Edward John Price (Ted)(1899-1974) was the third child of Edward Joseph and Annie Price. He lived a very industrious life in the area. When the new CRB road cut through the family land Edward John established a Corn and Produce store on a level area adjoining the new road . Along with his brother Charlie, Ted took up road contracting and formed Grange Road in 1923. They also took up contracts to metal the CRB road between The Gap and Olinda. Edward John married Myra Wilson in 1930. They lived in the first brick home built in the district. Falls Creek Historical Society
Photograph - Paul Hogan at Julian's Lodge 1973
Julian Newton-Brown arrived at Falls Creek in 1957. He had studied Pharmacy at Melbourne University. After developing a love for the mountains, Julian moved to Mt. Beauty and then Falls Creek. He worked for the SEC in the test laboratory at Rocky Valley reading weather instruments. By working several jobs, Julian was able to build a small lodge of 10 beds named “Arundel”, located at 18 Slalom Street, Falls Creek. The lodge is now the “Elk at Falls”. Arundel prospered and Julian extended it to include 32 beds and changed its name to "Julian’s” in 1961. When alcohol restrictions were eased in Falls Creek, Julian built a night club which he called “Big Julian’s” and later “THE MAN”. When Julian and his wife Beth retired and left Falls Creek, their son took over running the lodge. An active community man, Julian was a member of the Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce, a member of the SES, a stakeholder in Falls Creek, an author and a documentary maker. Julian Newton-Brown died in May 2020. In 2003 when this flyer was published operation of Julian's Lodge transferred from Julian and is wife Beth to their son Charlie Brown, a former Australian Champion and World Cup skier and his wife, Bena. This item is significant because it gives details of an important lodge at Falls Creek, Victoria.A black and white image of Paul Hogan, John Cornell and other people sitting near fire place in the dining room at Julian's Lodge in 1973. Paul Hogan and a group of actors and film crew spent several days in Falls Creek filming a Winfield cigarette commercial, in which they were portrayed as ski instructors. According to Julian Brown's book "Falls Creek - How it came to be", they brought in a truck load of polystyrene balls to create snow. The commercial was in 16mm for television and 36 mm for cinemas. It took them three days to shoot a six second scene in the dining room at Julian's lodge.julian's lodge, julian newton brown, falls creek ski lodges, accommodation falls creek, charlie brown -
