The Diamond Valley Community Hospital was established in 1942 in Grimshaw Street Greensborough. Due to financial circumstances, the hospital closed in 2000. This collection of photo albums is from the 1990s and was collected by staff. This album contains photographs of the 50th Anniversary celebrations at DVCH and includes the 'Gala Day' 18/8/91 and Staff 'High Tea' 15/8/91. The album includes programs, an invitation and list of acceptances. Photographs include staff and functions held for the hospital. Photographs are not named. This medallion was produced at the Royal Australia Mint in Canberra in 1988 to commemorate the Bicentenary of European settlement in Australia. The obverse design was by Michael Meszaros and the Bicentenary logo was designed by Michael Tracy. This medallion was given to Elizabeth Douglas in 1988 in recognition of her work as Secretary of the Shire of Hampden Bicentennial Community Committee. At the time Miss Douglas was Principal of Derrinallum High School, a position she held from 1984 to 1991. The Celebration Cup perpetual trophy was presented by Rod and David McKenna at the March Half Yearly General Meeting. Rod addressed the meeting, acknowledging that from its humble beginnings in 1875, the Royal Brighton Yacht Club has been a beacon of excellence in the yachting community. Over the past century and a half, it has grown not only in size and stature but also in the hearts and minds of countless individuals who have shared in the passion and spirit of sailing. The McKenna Family has over 232 years of total membership between them and have been involved in the Royal Brighton Yacht Club community since 1941 when Keith McKenna was first elected to the club membership and appointed Honorary Treasurer in 1950 for 10 Years. Keith’s wife Judith was elected to the club membership in 1981and acted as Treasurer for the Ladies Auxiliary for 35 + Years, both contributing to its growth and success through their unwavering support and dedication. Each of Rod and David’s grandfathers were also members while Rod and David continue to support the club in Race Management duties. The Cup is first awarded for the 150th Anniversary Regatta held on the weekend of 29, 30 March 2025, with winners of each class and Division honoured with a plaque on the Cup. The Deed of Gift accompanying this trophy allows for future celebratory events to preserve the legacy of our club for future generations. Portland C.E.M.A. (Council for Encouragement of Music and the Arts) was formed in 1945. In 2025, as part of its 80th Birthday celebrations, a series of taped interviews from the 1980s and 1990s were digitised with the assistance of Glenelg Shire Community Grants. (Arts and Culture) The variable quality of the original recordings has meant digitisation has not been possible for all interviews. Transcripts have been provided where possible.The series of oral history interviews (1983-1990) captured the memories of some active early members of the Portland Council for Encouragement of Music and the Arts. First hand memories of the formation of the organisation in 1945, early activities of its groups, fundraising and building of the CEMA Arts Centre provide a window into community life in Portland and District in the post WW2 era. The two ladies in the photograph are Sia Andrews and Helen Koutsoukis at a social function at the Ithacan club rooms. Sia, a second generation Ithacan, was the first woman president of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. Helen's parents were from the island of Kastellorizo. Sia's son Ross and Helen's daughter Chrisanthi (Cynthia) married. In the early days of Greek migration the Ithacans and the Kastellorizians were two of the largest Greeks communities in Melbourne. The children of this first wave of immigrants, such as Sia and Helen, developed close friendship through Greek school and various cultural celebrations and social connections. The portrait photograph is of Nina (Regina) Black (Mavrokefalos). Nina is the first born of Constantine and Efstathia (Toula) Mavrokefalou. Her father was a founding member of the Society and her mother was President of the first Greek women's committee established in Melbourne in 1917, the Greek Women's Organisation. Nina was well known for her contribution to Greek community life. Nina was a member of Ladies' Auxiliary of the IPS in the 1950s and held the position of treasurer. Nina was also a member of AHEPA and the first president of the Daughters of Penelope. She taught Greek at the Greek Community school as well as to non-Greeks at the Council of Adult Education. Nina also performed in Greek theatrical productions and taught Greek dance to Greeks and non-Greeks. In 1985 Nina Black received the Hellenic Distinction Award for her contribution to Greek language and cultural pursuits in Australia and during the Bicentennial celebrations (1988) she was honoured by the Australian Government for achievements in the wider Australian community. The photo was taken on 'Oxi' Day 28 October 1951 which is commemorated throughout Greece and Cyprus and world-wide Greek communities. The day commemorates the rejection by the Greek prime minister, Ioannis Metaxas of the ultimatum presented to him by the Italian ambassador on the 28 October 1940 to allow the Axis forces, namely Italy, Germany and Bulgaria to occupy strategic locations of Greece or face war. The children in the picture were students at the Greek language school which was run by the Greek Community of Melbourne and were attending the '28th October' Greek national day celebration at the Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church in East Melbourne. The two women, Alexandra Vrachna and Nina Black were teachers at the school. The Evangelismos Church was the first Greek orthodox Church to be established in Melbourne. The foundation stone was laid in December 1900 and church services commenced in August 1902. The 28th October is known as 'OHI' DAY', translated meaning NO DAY. It is an important national day celebrated in Greece and the Greek diaspora and commemorates the anniversary when in 1940 the then Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas said “NO” to an ultimatum made by Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini to allow Italian forces to occupy Greece. It marked the beginning of Greece's entry into WW2. The day symbolises values important to the Greek people - freedom, courage and 'filotimo'. The establishment of the Orthodox church in Melbourne in the early years of the twentieth century was was indicative of the number of Greek migrants who came to Australia in those early years of settlement in this country and the desire maintain their religious and cultural traditions. The early Greek migrants were anxious that their Australian born children maintain their language and religion in their adopted country. Celebrations such as marriages and baptisms played an important social role in the Ithacan community as they were an opportunity for families and friends to come together. The first official dance was held on April 23 1918, two years after the establishment of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. The celebration depicted may have been a New Years Eve function. New Year's Eve celebrations were a very popular event through to the 1990s. Dances were popular social events for the Ithacan community and an opportunity for Ithacans to socialise and enjoy Greek music and dancing. The photograph is of Ag. Sotiros Church which is built in the traditional Byzantine design and stands in the village square of the village of Stavros in Ithaca. The festival of Sotiros is the biggest on the island taking place over two days, the 5th and 6th of August, and attracts large crowds. Stavros is the largest village in northern Ithaca. The larger villages on the islands hold feast days celebrating the saint of their local church. Michael's Building was the club rooms for the Ithacan Philanthropic Society from its inception in 1916 until 1958 when the society acquired its own building at 329 Elizabeth Street.The Ithacan Club occupied the first and second floors of Michael's Building. A 'kafeneo' was located on the first floor and social activities such as dances, children's parties and Christmas and New Year's celebrations were held on the second floor. For many of the early Ithacan migrants to Melbourne, the Ithacan Philanthropic Society was like a home away from home.
