Historical information

The photograph is of Ag. Sotiros Church which is built in the traditional Byzantine design and stands in the village square of the village of Stavros in Ithaca. The festival of Sotiros is the biggest on the island taking place over two days, the 5th and 6th of August, and attracts large crowds. Stavros is the largest village in northern Ithaca.

Significance

The larger villages on the islands hold feast days celebrating the saint of their local church. In the summer months when the island's population swells, these celebrations attract large crowds and generations of Ithacans gather together to enjoy themselves and raise money for their local communities.
