Image 14 David and Claire Newbury House and Artists Studio Commenced 1954 Designed by David Newbury Built by David Newbury, Horrie Judd and others The Alistair Knox Collection The Alistair Knox Collection is a series of mounted enlarged photos of mud brick houses and related subjects. The collection is understood to have been put together by Alistair Knox although it is the work of several unacknowledged photographers. For some years it was held by the Building Department of the former Eltham Shire Council and was then passed to our Society for safekeeping. Some of the photos have been used in Knox's books and from time to time some of them have been part of various historical displays. As far as we know there has not been a public display of the whole collection which numbers about forty photographs. The collection has been copied on to slides for the purpose of this meeting and to be retained as part of the Society's pictorial collection. Alistair Knox 1912 - 1986 is acknowledged as the founder of Eltham's mud brick building movement. Many of the buildings shown in the collection are of his design and he was also involved with the construction of several of them. Others are the work of his contemporaries and associates such as Peter Glass, Gordon Ford, and John Harcourt. This is a collection of 19 photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps personnel taken at the School of Military Survey (SMS), Bonegilla and the Army Survey Regiment (ASR), Bendigo from 1977 to 1989. Personnel identified in photographs .1P to .6P were attending their initial employment training at the SMS. Personnel identified in the remaining photographs were posted to the ASR in the 1980s.This is a collection of 19 photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps personnel probably taken at the School of Military Survey, Bonegilla and the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo from 1977 to 1989. Cpl Gordon Maxwell Ferguson served with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and he served in Vietnam from June 1965 to August 1965 with 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. Copt/Major Peter John Naughton served with the Royal Australian Army Dental Corps. He did two tours of Vietnam, the first from May 1965 to May 1966 with Australian Logistics Support Company and the second from March 1968 to April 1968 with Ships Army Staff (HMAS Sydney). L/Cpl David Maxwell Munday served with the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and served in Vietnam from May 1965 to July 1965 with the 1st Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment when he was badly wounded. He was awarded the Military Medal.A Collection of Newspaper Clippings from three separate donors. The first is titled "this Was one Man's War" which is a story on Cpl Gordon Maxwell Ferguson describing part of his time serving. Also mention in the article is Pte L.A. Bakker. The second article is a photograph of a small Vietnamese boy being treated by Australian Army dentist Capt Peter Naughton with is assistant Sgt Brian Wilson. There is an article under the photograph starting with the words A RAAMC Officer now in Britain. The third article is titled 'Digger gets medal' is about the bravery of L/Cpl David Maxwell Munday who was awarded a Military Medal. William Smerdon Holmes married Violet Mary Macfie (1859 – 1942) on 9 April 1890 at Geelong. William and Violet lived at "Sauchieburn", Ascot on the 291 ha (720 acre) property that William inherited from his aunt Catherine Coghill (nee Holmes). William and Violet Holmes had four children: • Violet Catherine (1891- 1949) married Samuel Gordon Spittle 11 August 1920; Mary Coghill (1892 - 1979); • William Edward (1894 - 1964) married Charlotte Anne Alexander 20 June 1933; • Henry Smerdon (1897 - 1954) married Edith Sarah Pickford 28/2/1922. William Smerdon Holmes was the grandfather of Henry John (Jack) Holmes (1922-1972) William Smerdon Holmes (1927-1993), David Coghill Holmes (1929-1950) and Mary Elizabeth Chatham (Elizabeth) (nee Holmes) (1932 - 2006). William Smerdon Holmes died in June 1914 and is buried at the Ballarat New Cemetery. A black and white photograph glued into card. It shows a moustached man in coat, collar, tie and tie-pin.
