WW1 Issue British War medal to all three services for overseas service throughout WW1 1914-1918. Medal belongs to Pte. A. E. Hollis, Chiltern Resident. WW1 1914-1918 The Great War. WW1 Campaign medal "British War Medal" cupro nickel plate. Silver in colour. The reverse has an image of St George on horseback trampling underfoot the eagle shield of the Central Powers, and a skull and cross-bones, the emblems of death. Above this is the risen sun of victory. The years 1914 and 1918 are contained on the outside edge medal. Ribbon The ribbon has a wide central watered stripe of orange, flanked by two narrow white stripes, which are in turn flanked by two black pin-stripes, further flanked by two outer stripes of blue. Informal 12 hole golf event, played on Grand Final weekend. This event was started by a group of friends when there were few official golf tournaments played at Peterborough. The event was a stroke event with "mystery handicaps" ie you didn't know your handicap until you finished playing. The event was played on the Sunday of Grand Final weekend (except initially); Friday night traditionally was tea at Boggy Creek Pub and a Fishing Comp on Saturday. The name came about because three of the regular players, Ivan Voss, Bob Loader and R. McKendrick had a hut at the top of the dunes near Crofts Bay. They had a clinker boat on the beach as well. They subsequently built a house in Childers St. It ceased when the original participants were no longer able to play. The date of the first winner is 1980, last recorded winner is 1995. The book was published in the UK. This book was purchased with the help of Mrs E. C. Baker, c/o John Pook and Co, 68 Fenchurch St, London EC3 - from The Needlewoman Shop, Specialists in Needlework, 146 Regent Street London W.1. Then posted to Mrs G R (Joan) Horridge at ICI in Hong Kong. Book was owned and used by Joan Francis Horridge.Paper booklet bound with two rusted metal staples on spine. Cover is in colour and depicts a woman knitting. Prominent colours are black, green, blue and cream. Inside covers contains pages which are smaller than the covers. Pages contain printed black text detailing various knitting patterns and knitting information. Various colour photos of Wimmera Flour Mill at time it was being demolished. Note roof being dismantled. Rail line in foreground. Willaim Frayne founded the Wimmera Flour Mill on a site in Taylor Street (beside the railway line) Stawell 1876. When Willian Frayne dies 1899 his son George took over the mill. The mill continued to be a propriety company until early 1966, when it was sold to the Victorian Mill Owners. The sale was forced because of the lack of export markets. A factor which affected most country mills. The Victorian Oat Growers Pool took over on July 1st, 1967. Trading under the name of Wimmera Flower Mill as a subsidiary company. Later years it sold clipped and graded seed, oats, stockfeed for poultry, pigs and dairy cattle and all types of crushed grain. The original Frayne homestead still stands behind where the Mill stood facing Frayne Street. In 2007 during our "Collection Review" the four smaller colour photos, which were donated by Mr. Mick Walsh, 52 Patrick St Stawell were very similar to the bigger photo in the file 139.6e.139-6 a-d & e Coloured photographs showing various views of the Wimmera Flour Mill or Grain Handling Corporation building in progress of being demolished. There is a red brick building with a tiled roof in these coloured photos. The rail line is shown in foreground of 139-6 e. W. Membrey Blacksmith Shop in Patrick Street beside the sale yards which later became the Technical School Gold Reef Campus. W. Membrey died when young leaving a large family. The business was then rented to Mr. G. Brehaut for 12/6 (twelve shillings six pence) per week. The Membrey family lived in Skene St. Stawell for many years. E.C. Grant. W.J. McMullin. W.K. Thomas (Presbyterian) the 3 photos copied from Jubilee History 1860 -1911 St Matthews Presbyterian (Church Stawell). The Jubilee History was printed and taken from The Times, Main St. Stawell. Mr. E.C. Grant was Treasurer for 29 years. A tablet placed on the wall above the vestry door to perpetuate the memory of Mr. E. C. Grant, one of the greatest benefactors the church ever had. The inscription reads: In memoriam/ erected by the congregation of St Matthew's/ in memory of / The Stirling worth of / Edmund Craigie Grant/ who died 4th July 1894/ aged 63 years. He was a sincere Christian/ A most Liberal & generous giver/ and a true lover of his kind. / Well done good, and faithful servant Matthew XXV. v23. Mr. W.J. McMullin was a secretary of the Sabbath School - later became superintendent a position he held for 26 years. Up to the time of his death - Faithfully discharged his duties. Mr. W.J. McMullin had the distinction of serving as an elder for 26 years from 1883 until the time of his death in 1909. Mr. W.K.
