Part of a collection obtained by K C Hofmaier 1963 by purchase of a library at gembrrok (Vic) which contained a number of books from the old Ballarat german language library with school text books and theological works formerly the property of the founder of Ballarat College Rev'd Wm Henderson. William Henderson was Minister of St Andrews Kirk at the time of writing. The very strong Presbyterian roots of Ballarat College were a legacy of this man. The item dates from the years of Dutch influence in the region which ended in 1962. The region is now known as West Papua.As the above urls will show, West Papua's history is a complex one with various colonial powers disputing ownership with the local inhabitants. Modern Indonesia also lays claim to it. The area was part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands from 1949 till 1962. Prior to 1949 it was part of the Dutch East Indies. Else Oertel was an internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. Else (a German) was interned in the same compound as many Italians. Her Italian neighbours, Mr & Mrs Manlio & Henrietta Pecchioni presented this prayer book to her in memory of their internment together. The dual-naming of the Wimmera Library took place in November 2019, and includes a name in local Wergaia language. The Horsham Campus is now known as “Werrunangity larr Wimmerata” (pronounced: Wherroon narn kitch – larr – wimmerartar) meaning “a quiet place in the Wimmera.” The official naming took place in the presence of Professor Helen Bartlett (Vice Chancellor who was joined by Aunty Jennifer Beer, Uncle Rob Fry, Geoff Lord (Horsham Campus Director) , Sue Owen (Library Director), Jasmine Graham (Manager of the Aboriginal Education Centre), Keith Caldwell (Facilities), Katrina Beer and artist Tanisha Lovett. This naming was the result of extensive teamwork and community consultation between local Aboriginal Elders, land councils, our Aboriginal Education Centre, as well as library and campus leadership. Prout was born in Plymouth and was a member of the New Watercolour Society in London, he latter emigrated and lived for some time in Sydney and Hobart before returning to England. Published in "Australia... Illustrated with Drawings by Skinner Prout, N Chevalier, etc. by Edwin Carlton Booth F.R.C.I. (printed 1873-76) Virtue & Co., London, and as part work from about 1873. Born in Plymouth and nephew of Samuel Prout (Topographical illustrator, drawing master and colourist). John specialised in similar subjects to his uncle but was practically self-taught. He was elected a member of the New Watercolour Society on his return from Australia in 1849, where he visited Sydney and Hobart. He had already forfeited his membership of the NWS in 1838 by being overseas. John settled in Bristol after 1849 whewre he became a good friend of W.J. Muller (artist). Diana NIKKELSON (c1943-30 December 2022) Diana Nikkelson is a Ballarat-based Gunditjmara elder. Her grandfather was Watchobaluk. A part of the stolen generation, Diana Nikkelson was one of 10 children, and she had nine children of her own. A founding member of the Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-operative in the late-70s, Diana Nikkelson was a board director for 16 years and chair for six years. She worked on the Bunjil the Eagle installation at the Koorie Playground at Lake Wendouree, and designed the goanna which was etched into the paving along Police Lane in 2006, and has painted murals across Ballarat. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The box pieces belong to a VeeDee Massager that has been in the Historical Society collection for several years. It is an interesting example of the dubious medical aids used by 19th century and early 20th century people who resorted to this sort of appliance to try to find relief for many ailments. The box lists the ailments that the massager claims to be able to treat effectively. These include rheumatism, lung troubles, sciatica, insomnia, kidney disease, paralysis, constipation, deafness, bowel complaints and tumours. These box pieces are kept because they have much information on them regarding the use of the VeeDee massager, with a list of the ailments and medical conditions that are claimed to be cured or aided by the use of massager. The information is of use when researching social and medical history and tells us much about the primitive knowledge of ailments and illnesses in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The massager is a medical curiosity of much interest to people today and is a valuable and fascinating display piece. These are the remains of a box that contained a VeeDee massager. There are two pieces - a flattened piece of cardboard that once formed the base and sides of the box and another cardboard piece that was the top of the box. The two small ends of the original box are missing.
