This banner was constructed by a group of Deacons and Deaconesses at a National Diaconate Conference held in Melbourne in February 1993. The banner was originally held at Catherine Ritchie House. It is significant because it was put together by a group of Deacons who were ordained in December 1992 and Deaconesses who gathered for the biennial National Diaconate Conference which was held in Melbourne in February 1993 prior to the formal establishment of DUCA (Diaconia UCA, the national body of Deacons and Deaconesses in the Uniting Church in Australia). This conference happed at a time leading up to a special service in Wesley Uniting Church in Melbourne when 12 Deaconesses were ordained as Deacons in Feb 1993. The banner was first used in this special service of Ordination in February 1993. Calico wall banner with 54 individual square panels. This blouse shows excellent workmanship and is very decorative. It is not every-day-wear, but would have been worn for special occasions.This blouse is an example of the needlework skills of women in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.A woman's black blouse or top made of shot silk and with panels of black lace. It has long sleeves which are trimmed with lace at the wrist. Down the front of the garment is a pleated panel with the fine pleats travelling cross-ways. An item forming part of a collection of costumes, photographs and documents relating to the Weir family who lived in the mansion originally named Illapa, 84 Princess Street, Kew, from c.1917 to 1950. This historically significant collection includes items relating to both George Weir (1866-1937) and his wife Edith Mary Weir (1867-1948). George Weir attained national prominence in the mining industry, becoming General Manager of the North Broken Hill Silver Mining Company in 1903 (later renamed North Broken Hill Mining Company 1905-12, and North Broken Hill Ltd 1912-1988), and subsequently President of the Mine Owners Association. He was to remain General Manager of North Broken Hill Ltd until his retirement in 1926.This garment is part of a collection of women’s clothing, owned and worn by Edith Mary Weir (nee Betteridge) - born in Clare, South Australia 1867, died Kew 1948 - and also by her daughter. The garments date from the 1880s to the 1930s. The collection includes day dresses, evening dresses, evening coats, capes, and undergarments. As the wife and daughter of a mine manager, the collection includes representative examples of clothing worn by upper middle class Australian women in domestic circumstances, and at social and civic events. A number of the costumes from the 1920s to the 1930s are of a particularly fine quality, being both rare, representative and intact examples of Australian fashion of the period. The garments in the Weir Collection were donated to the Kew Historical Society by a granddaughter of Edith Weir in 2017.Long black crepe de chine and lace dress. Joseph Bosisto, MP, had been presented with an extensive collection of seeds by the English firm of Sutton Bros In 1888. He, in turn, presented the collection to the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria (RHSV) for permanent display. They remained on display in the Pavillion until its demolition in 1951.) Wooden wall-bracket with paper prints of natural grasses pasted on to 12 tin hinged panels. Front panel has 2 Royal Warrants awarded to Sutton & Sons - Seed Merchants, London, 1 dated 1871, the other 1884. Long lily-pointed sleeves, fastened at the wrist with six X 0ne cm covered buttons and loops. A firm padded roll 19cm long, and eleven cm circumference sits at the shoulder at top of sleeve. A gathered panel on either side of the neckline forms a sweetheart neckline. Gathering under the bust, and a A shaped centre front panel - with V shape at lower edge-panel 33cm long. Two semi-circular panels 28 X 19cm from side seam to the centre front, and defining the shape of the peaked centre panel. A small inverted pleat comes from th ebottom peak of the centre panel. Skirt is circular and extends into a sweeping train.29 covered buttons with loops extend from the back neckline to the curved join at the hipline of bodice and skirt. A one cm band of fabric has been machine stitched around the hemline, and hand rolled and hand stitched to give weight and finish at the hemline. The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories.This evening gown is one of a number of items donated to the Collection by Rosemary-Vaughan Smith.Full length ivory satin evening gown, possibly used previously as a wedding dress. The 8/13 VMR was raised in May 1948 and was a participant in the Anzac Day marches in the district from that day forward. The sailor is John Neale wearing his WWII RAN uniform; the airman is Jack Larkin wearing his WWII RAAF uniform. The soldier (as yet unknown) also had WWII service. Photo of Harry Tinson who was winemaker at Baileys in Glenrowan from 1968 until 1982. An ageing Alan Bailey (greatgrandson of founder Richard Bailey) sold the winery to Davis Consolidated Industries (mainly a gelatine producer). At the time Harry Tinson, with a Master’s degree in physical engineering, was in the corporate planning department of Davis. The board had decided it wished to diversify into wine production and Tinson was charged with the responsibility of finding a suitable target. He came up with Baileys, and was instructed to negotiate the purchase of a 50 per cent share in the business. Bailey said “all or nothing” !
