Photos of a ceremony and wreath laying at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. It was part of the Golden Jubilee 50 year celebrations in 1973. Two photos show wreaths being laid at the base of the Cenotaph, one of these is by President Geoff Handbury. The a close up of the Geoff Handbury standing with Sir Edmund Herring, Lieutenant-General of Victoria, with the Shrine in the background. Another of the same two men beside other Legatees preparing to march behind a military band (see also 00479). It is possible this is the same event when an Olive Tree of Peace was planted in the western lawn of the Shrine. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. The Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1979, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. This is a programme of the Warrnambool City Council Civic & Thanksgiving Official Service on November 1918. The service was held in the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens, conducted by the Ministers of the Churches in Warrnambool and led by the combined choirs of the churches. It was a public occasion held to offer thanksgiving for the end of World War One in November 1918. One of the hymns sung had the opening lines: ‘O God of Love, O King of Peace/Make wars throughout the world to cease’. The service was attended by the Mayor of Warrnambool and the City Councillors and Council employees. World War One was a signal event in the history of Warrnanmbool (as it was for all places in Australia) with so many young men volunteering for active service and so many dying overseas.This programme is of great interest as it records an important occasion in Warrnambool – the end of World War One and the official service of thanksgiving that commemorated this happening. This is a programme for the Warrnambool City Council Civic & Thanksgiving Official Service in November 1918. It is a sheet of buff-coloured paper folded in two to make four pages. There is blue printed material on three of the pages. The front page has the City of Warrnambool crest printed in blue with blue edging on the page and some ornamental patterns. Pierce Butler (1865-1927) was born in Kilmore and moved to Bendigo aged 12. He initiall worked with Mr Trumble, chemist before he became assistant to Mr A Collins in his new practice in View Street opposite the Bank of Victoria. At this time he was primarily a dentist. He then became the dentist operating out of London's pharmacy, 24 Pall Mall. By 1910 he was advertising as a dispenser and dentist at London's pharmacy. By 1915 he was operating his own business as a chemist and dentist in Mitchell St where he continued until his death. In 1891 he married Elizabeth Anderson (1867-1937) and they lived in Macrae Street. Pierce Butler was also a Justice of the Peace. Small round cardboard Pill Box from P. Sculpture by Peter Schipperheyn. Erected by the RSL in 1984 and dedicated on 21 April 1985. The sculpture is 3m high. The memorial commemorates four Victoria Cross recipients from St Kilda: Captain A. Jacka V.C. M.C. & Bar; Major W. Ruthven V.C.; Lt. L. D. McCarthy V.C., Croix de Guerre; Ft. Lt. W. E. Newton V.C. It is dedicated in 'memory of all Australians who died in war so that we may have peace'. Born in Ireland in 1838, Annie Ross married Samuel Lewers at Creswick in 1856. Samuel Lewers, a gold buyer and bank agent, became manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Linton in about 1860, and was afterwards the first Shire of Grenville President and a Justice of the Peace. Annie and Samuel Lewers had eleven children. They lived in the residence at the Bank of NSW building in Sussex Street (this building now known as Traquair House). Around the time Samuel Lewers retired in 1895 they leased and moved to Emu Hill, the property formerly owned by the Linton family, at that time owned by Edward Morey. Samuel Lewers died shortly after his retirement, in 1895. Annie Lewers died at Emu Hill in 1904.Black & white copy of original photograph, showing Annie Lewers as a comparatively young woman. Scroll commemorates Flight Lieutenant J H Wilkinson DFC RAAF who served King and Country in the world war of 1939-1945 and gave his life to save mankind from tyranny. May his sacrifice help to bring the peace and freedom for which he died. The Service Ribbons relate to Benjamin Thomas Roy Chadd 1st and 2nd AIF. Enlisted on 27.1.1916 No 10594 in Div Signal Company 3 age 20 years. Embarked for overseas 27.5.1916. As a driver in Signals he was WIA on 4.6.1918 GSW to right thigh. Discharged from the AIF on 14.6.1919. At some point he enlisted in the Peace time Army and was promoted to Lieut 3rd Div Signals on 1.7.1921, promoted Major 19.2.1929, to Command 2nd Div Sigs 9.9.1936, 3rd Div Sigs 5.5.1939 then to 7th Div Sigs as Lt Col and transfers to the AIF as VX20311, serves in the Middle East, Syria and Pacific.
