On 29 February 1892 'The Argus' reported on the first Annual Meeting of the Clunes School of Mines. "The annual meeting of the council of the Clunes School of Mines was held last evening at the town-hall. In place of members of the council retiring by effluxion of time the following were elected: — Rev. Elder Gray, Messrs. John Beveridge, R. Nichol, J. Bryant, W. T. Pitcher, J. H. Daley, and T. Gilbert. The first annual report, showing remarkable progress, was received and adopted. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: — Rev. E. Grey, president; Rev. Father John Barrett and Dr. Gordon, vice- presidents; Mr. Joseph Bryant, hon. director; Mr. W. Y. Witherden, hon. treasurer, Mr. H. E. Sando retained the office of secretary, and the officers for the time being were appointed trustees." Great satisfaction was expressed with the success of the school, and the progress and extent of the classes. It was referred to a sub committee to make arrangements for allowing the free inclusion, in certain classes, of a limited number of boys and girls of 14 and upward, who on examination qualified themselves for the privilege. This lamp is typical of lamps used in Welsh Coal Mines. It was purchased from the supplier around mid 1995. The Welsh Miners’ Lamps were ingeniously designed over 180 years ago to alert coal miners to danger. It ensures the burning of a protected flame in the presence of explosive gas, by regulating the necessary supply of atmospheric air, and by allowing the products of combustion to pass through without igniting the gaseous atmosphere. If the atmosphere is so heavily charged that noxious gas enters the lamp, its presence will be indicated by a change in the length and color of the flame, and (unless there are exceptional circumstances), the miner has sufficient warning to secure his safety. A civic campaign for new public offices developed in Kew in the 1880s. After much deliberation, the location chosen was the junction of Bulleen and Cotham Roads. The buildings were designed by George Watson and John Henry Harvey, architects within the Department of Public Works (Victoria). Building was commenced in 1887, and after one year, the buildings were opened. The Post Office was transferred to the new Commonwealth Government in 1901. The Police Station and Court House, sold by the Victorian Government to the City of Boroondara in 2007, are now a community cultural centre and performing arts venue.The buildings were listed on the Victorian Heritage Register Register (HO885) in 1991. They are historically and architecturally significant to the State of Victoria because Watson and Harvey's designs exhibit diversity in integrating civil offices, they accommodate the apex of road junctions, and they demonstrate a departure from the contemporaneously favoured High Victorian Classical to the Queen Anne style in the design of civic buildings.View through the Cotham Road carpark towards High Street of the southeast corner of the former police station. The building in the photograph was the first Sunbury State School No.1002. Prior to the school being built, lessons were conducted in the Presbyterian Church. After parents organised a petition in 1869 for the school to be housed in a proper building and a committee of management was formed, work on a new school building commenced. The old building had many structural deficiencies and the red brick building was built on the same site in 1911. Built post WW2 as home for Rev Canon Albert E Clark. The decorative brick and stone work on house and in garden built by Canon Clark with assistance of wife and daughter Ruth. Surrey Hills Golf Club operated from 1892-1908 then moved and became Riversdale Golf Club. The game was played across paddocks from Trafalgar Street, Mont Albert to Whitehorse Road and down Victoria Crescent to where Box Hill TAFE is now located in Elgar Road. There were problems with cows eating the tee flags!
