Two blocks of tickets each - red ink on buff 60 gsm paper, denomination 4d (printed in blue), headed State Electricity Commission of Victoria, Provincial Tramways. Originally a block of 50 tickets been stapled onto a heavy cardboard back with a heavy metal staple and a small cardboard retaining strip at the top of the ticket. The ticket number is in black ink while the "E" prefix is in red, the ticket number is in black. Document - Plans, Andrew Wood, Building plans associated with Andrew Wood, builder of Surrey Hills, 1920s
These plans were associated with Mr Andrew Wood, a contract builder who worked in the 1920s and built many Californian bungalows in Surrey Hills and surrounding suburbs. Andrew Wood was born in Chiltern in 1861 to Andrew and Ellen Wood (MS: Green). His father had emigrated from Falkirk, Scotland. As a young man Andrew worked as a carpenter in the mines in South Africa (c 1899). He married Eleanor Agnes Stuchbery in Hamilton, Victoria in May 1901. They had 5 children - Doris (M Roberts), Robert Andrew, Donald Allen, Jean (M Cowan), and Gwenyth (M Bray). The first 2 children were born in Hawthorn; the other 3 in Surrey Hills. The family home at 286 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills (on the corner of Middlesex Road) was built by Andrew. Andrew died in 1940; Eleanor died in 1977, aged 100 years. After Eleanor's death the house was sold and demolished. Surrey Lighting was established on the site. Gwenyth May Wood (3 May 1917, Surrey Hills - 5 Jan 2004) married Leslie David Charles Bray (1921-1983). Gwenyth was the donor's mother. Petrol rationing was gazetted in May 1941. Australia's lack of fuel storage options and the diversion of tankers bringing fuel here forced the government to begin rationing. Initially it was proposed that consumption should be reduced by 50% but this was modified to 1/3 reduction. People had to apply for a petrol licence and this was then used to obtain ration coupons. Initially coupons were issued on a 6 monthly basis but this was reduced to 2 monthly and allowed people roughly 2000 gallons per year. Coupons allowed for 1, 2, 5, 10, 44 and 100 gallon amounts depending on need. eg. private, commercial, farm use. Rationing was strictly enforced until 1942 but remained in effect until 1950.WWII Fuel 1 Gallon Ration Tickets: 2 x tickets rectangular shaped with perforated edges, cream card with red and blue print. Background in blue ink with round shapes printed "Department of Supply and Development". Commonwealth Emblem in the middle at the top is also in blue along with 1 gallon and "This Ticket must be endorsed by consumer with name and licence number". Printed in red at the top is "Motor Spirit Ration Ticket". Commonwealth Control Board Liquid Fuel. Issued under national security Liquid Fuel Regulations. Valid only until 31st Mar. 1942 Not Transferable. On the back hand written in black ink is "G. Alice Jones 2(e)/4652". -

This item is part of a collection donated by Pte Neil Ernest Swainston (3801127) who was called up for National Service but was only in the Australian Army from 24 Apr 71 to 20 Oct 72 a total of 183 days. Reason for Pte Swainston’s discharge: Having completed the prescribed period of service in the ARAS (NS). During service Pte Swainston did 5 months with Recruit and Corps Training and regimental and rifleman duties with Infantry until his discharge.Two-part perforated document from Department of Labour and National Service signed by P H Cook, Secretary, bearing Registration Number 21765955. Addressed to Mr N E Swainston, 37 Leamington St, Reservoir, Victoria and date stamped 18 Feb 1971. This typed pro-forma document is a call-up notice instructing the receiver to appear at the Combined Services Recruiting Centre, 301 Flinders Lane, Melbourne at 7:30 pm on 25 February 1971 to appear before a medical board. Yields information about a system of tram passes that were provided to the City of Ballarat Councillors in 1960 and has a strong association with the Councillors himself.Stamped brass badge or pass for free travel on the Ballarat Tramways for the year 1906. Stamped to give the words "Ballarat Electric Trams 1906" on the outer edge of the Badge and then stamped out to give the letters 'B E T" on the inside of the badge. On the top of the badge, a hole has been provided and a steel ring fitted. On the rear of the badge has the letters "CR. D. Hughes" stamped on the top of the badge and on the bottom the manufacturer's name "Stokes" in a reverse stamp. Indicates badge issued to Councillor D. Hughes for the year 1906. A similar badge was sold on ebay for $US 49.95 December 2007 - paperwork on file. Images on file - images i3 and i4. Was issued to Councillor C. R. Brokenshire. E-mail from Alan Bradley, re additional item 29/1/2012 - See Reg Item - The Electric Supply Co issued the passes to councillors of the City of Ballaarat for free tram rides. I don't know whether passes also went to Ballarat East and Sebastopol councillors as well. In Bill Scott's "Last tram at 11" on page 41 is a 1912 poem 'The councillor's farewell to his tramway pass". The ESCo tried a few economy measures at that time. Passes for councillors were withdrawn in 1912, as were free passes for employees "owing to our financial position". Employees were still allowed on free in uniform, but charged one-third of fare when off duty. In 1913 one-man operation came in." For another example see Reg item 5239.
