The photo comes from a souvenir brochure printed for the dedication of The Shrine on 7 April 1918, a copy of which is also held in the collection.. The Shrine was opened on Sunday 7 April 1918. Mrs C H D Steele, President of the local Patriotic League, is credited with the idea of building The Shrine as a fitting memorial to the WW1 soldiers of the district. The Surrey Hills Progress Association coordinated raising funds from local residents. John Kendrick Blogg carved the beautiful honor roll in Indian teak and Australian white mahogany and the design of the Shrine was by John Stevens Gawler, architect of Gawler & Drummond. Both men donated their services. It was one of the first WW1 memorials to be built and is noted for its use of Australian motifs, wattle blossom and gum leaves. The boomerang over the full width of the monument was said to be symbolic of both those who did and did not return. Surrey Hills Progress Association coordinated fundraising to build the memorial. This is a set of 23 photographs of surveyors and support staff in the field undertaking tasks in New Guinea 1956 – 1957. The surveyors were employed in the establishment of mapping and geodetic control for Project Cutlass, the “Ship-Shore” survey of the New Ireland province. In this survey operation surveyors used theodolites to observe horizontal and vertical angles and chains to measure base line distances between survey stations. Bob Skitch shown in photo .7P was in the 2nd year of his career in the Australian Army. The back of the photo is inscribed "To dear Lizzie with love and best wishes from Nellie, Xmas 1911" - Lizzie being Elizabeth Ann Shillinglaw, daughter of Phillip and Sarah Shillinglaw born 1879. The woman in the photo appears to be aged approximately 40 years and is dressed and with a hair style typical of the fashion of 1911. This would make her birth year around the early 1870s. The only Nellie present in the family tree as currently understood is Helen (Nellie) Lyon born 1897 who came to Eltham from Mildura with her mother and brothers in 1913. She married Arthur Edward Bird however she is a generation younger and the dates do not fit. The only other known Nell is Ellen May Bird, daughter of George and Janet Bird, born 1892 so she too is a generation too young. A photo of a tram painted to promote Legacy in 1995 which was the 50th Anniversary of the end of World War II. Wording on the tram says: "This year - Australia remembers the Heroes of World War II / 50 years on / Legacy never forgets to care for the widows and children of those who fought for our freedom". The original owners were The Burgi Family.A very old small thick photograph album made of dark tan leather with an elaborate embossed floral tan and gold design on the front cover. The back cover has plain lined patterns in a square shape with the spine having black lines across it. The brass clasp on the side is in working order. It contains 15 thick double sided pages which have sepia family photographs inserted. There is one side missing a photograph. Each picture has the name of the photographic studio printed at the bottom of the photo. The whole album as quite worn and damaged.'Burgi' is written in blue biro on the left endpaper at the front. The photo probably includes Barbara, Ken and Laurie Young, the children of Ernest Lance (Lance) Young and his wife Beryl Mair who married in 1939 and came to 11 York Street during the WW2 years. The donor does not recognise all of the children. Linda Lawrence is the tallest girl; her brother Ken is largely obscured. Laurie is the youngest girl with the pigtails. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to 1980s, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall. In these photos it is at the Olympic Swimming Pool. A portrait of a former Junior Legatee, Noel Shiels who had enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force in World War 2. It was in an album of photos taken in the 1940s (mostly 1945). Research on NAA.gov.au and DVA confirms it was Noel Lindsey Sheils Service No 430062, who was born 31 March 1924 in Preston who joined the RAAF when he enlisted on 4 December 1942, he became a pilot and his rank was flying officer and was posted with the 37 Squadron. His father was James Howard Sheils Service No 158 of the 1st Bay AFA who died in May 1931 leaving his wife and 5 children. They were from a British vessel used during the Crimean War and were originally placed in the grounds of the Guildford Road Recreation Oval. The Dimmick Gateway was erected in 1950 by the citizens of Camberwell in memory of Cr William Dimmick, JP, Mayor of Camberwell, 1935-1936 and a Councillor from 1934-1947. There is a photo of him in Mayoral robes in the City of Boroondara Library Service collection. Cr Dimmick was commonly called Roy.Black and white photo of the Dimmick Gateway in Surrey Gardens. The gateway is built as if it was designed to have a fence attached but there is none. There are 2 tall central pillars and an arched bridge to 2 smaller pillars. It appears to be constructed from a variegated slate material. There is a light on the top of each of the tall pillars and also a plaque. To the RHS of the photo is part of the Surrey Shrine, skirted by 2 cypress trees.
