General use of milk bottles is usually associated with the 20th century , with occasional late 19th century. Initially, milk was delivered in cans stacked upright in a wagon. At each stop, someone, usually the wife of the house, would bring a pitcher or a pail to the wagon, and the milk man would ladle out the desired amount of milk. Needless to say, this practice was hazardous and unhealthy. The New York State Tuberculosis Association condemned the practice of selling “loose milk,” still being conducted in New York City in 1922, as a major cause for the spread of tuberculosis (Glass Container1922:8). The photograph printed on this postcard comes from the collection of the Mitchell Library in Sydney. It is sepia in tone and depicts seven men standing and sitting around a mine shaft in the Beechworth region. The photograph has been dated to approximately 1872. This period in history post-dates the Victorian gold rushes which occurred 1852-1853 in Ballarat, Bendigo and Beechworth. During this period, in the 1870s, the surface alluvial gold had been discovered and removed from location. Therefore, in order to reach the deeper and less accessible alluvial gold, diggers began to dig shafts into the earth. These shafts sunk below the ground level by 20 to 30 feet and required timber structures around the entrance and winches to bring the paydirt to the top. The top of this wooden structure is visible behind the man standing in the upper right of the image. This type of mining was highly dangerous as mines often caved in which injured the minors and often resulted in death. Thus, following this period, in the early 1900s, miners opted instead for hydrolic slucing which cut away the earth without the devastating consequences of a mine cave in. This particular group of miners appear to have been unable to afford a horse (then worth around 50 pounds) which were generally used at mines like this to help pull buckets attached to ropes up and down the mine. Instead, this group brought the buckets up and down by windlass. The windlass was a wooden structure mounted over the mining shaft and fitted with a hand-cranked winch which enabled the bucket attached to the rope to be brought up and down.Gold was first discovered in Beechworth in Spring and Reid's Creek in the summer of 1852-1853. At its popularity, this region had approximately 8000 people on the gold fields searching for gold on the banks of these creeks. These periods did not require the use of heavy machinery or the digging of deep mining shafts like the one depicted in this image. Therefore, this image has important connotations for the technologies associated with mining during the approximated 1870s when gold was harder to access. This is a later period in gold history which does not fit into the "gold rush" period. Instead, it occurred after the surface gold had disappeared and therefore, is essential for researchers who are investigating the mining techniques and structures used to reach the alluvial gold which was located deeper under ground in the 1870s. This period predates the use of big heavy machinery used to mine in the 1900s which include dredges. Images such as this one can also impart essential information as to the wardrobe and fashion of men during this period. It also imparts knowledge about the landscape of Beechworth which is useful for people researching the environment and impact of gold mining in the north-east region of Victoria. The kit bag was used by James Thomas Alfred Ralph, who was born in South Australia on 25 September 1897. He enlisted for service in the First World War on 17 May 1918 in Adelaide with the Australian Medical Corps General Reinforcements. He was allocated the service number 20568 and embarked from Adelaide on the HMT Gaika on 6 August 1918. He arrived in London, England on the 13 October 1918 and allocated to the Australian Army Medical Corps Training Depot. He transferred as a medical officer to the 1st Australian Hospital (Hayfield?) on 2 December 1918, and was attached to the 1st Australian Army Hospital (Sutton Vale?) in January 1919. He returned to Australia in Febuary 1920 on the Cape Verde as nursing staff. He was discharged from service in Adelaide on 17th March 1920.Tan coloured canvas kit bag used by a member of the Australian Army Medical Corps during World War 1. The tubular kit bag has 12 brass eyelets placed around its opening, and is reinforced with a second layer of canvas at its base. The kit bag has a side stitched seam, stiching around the base and top opening. A circular lightweight tan canvas flap is stitched to the top opening at the side seam.On the side if the kit bag is a red cross on a white background, surrounded by a circular yellow line. This book was originally intended as a Christmas and New Year diversion for soldiers facing a harsh winter in the trenches on Gallipoli. In November 1915 a committee was formed to produce the publication and a notice seeking contributions was circulated at Gallipoli. Prizes were offered for various categories and 150 submissions were received, although not all were incorporated in the book. After the evacuation of Gallipoli, official war correspondent Charles Bean and his assistant, Arthur Bazely, edited the contributions. The drawing on the front cover, "Gallipoli 1915" is by David Baker. Over 100,000 copies of the book were sold. About half went to the AIF and many could also be found in Australian households. It cost 2/6. The illustrations, stories, cartoons and poems for this book were cCreated by soldiers under enemy fire and in extreme hardship. Dedication to the Aboriginal soldiers who formed a special all volunteer platoon at No 9 Camp Wangaratta in Victoria from late 1940 until February 1941. No 9 Camp was set up at the Wangaratta Showgrounds to allow the formation of the 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion prior to leaving for Egypt. Major Joseph Albert Wright a WW1 Light Horse veteran was in charge of this platoon the only Aboriginal squad in the Australian Military Forces at that time. Aboriginals from Lake Tyers enlisted at Caulfield between June and July 1940. 7 of the 13 who enlisted in June 1940 were discharged as members of the 2/23rd Battalion. 10 were discharged on the 22/3/1941 as Services No Longer Required, 1 discharged in November 1940, 1 in January 1941 and another in April 1941. Gethla Forsyth, Alfred trainee, served with the Australian Army Nursing Service during World War II. Gethla was working at the Freemasons Hospital when she was told to report for duty in July 1941. Gethla was sent to Singapore as part of reinforcements for the 2/13th Australian General Hospital in January 1992. On February 12 1942 she was one of the nurses evacuated by the cargo vessel Empire Star. This ship suffered bomb damage, but after emergency repairs in Batavia (Jakarta) arrived in Freemantle on February 23 1942. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. In 1943 Westralia was converted into a Landing Ship, Infantry. In this role, Westralia had a capacity of 933 soldiers, and was used primarily to transport units of the United States Army and Marine Corps. The ship arrived at Manus on 7th April 1945 befoe reaching Morotai on the 19th. The 2/24th Australian Infantry Battalion embarked for attack on Tarakan Island, Borneo. On 1 May – After preliminary bombardment by two cruisers and six destroyers ,troops of 26th Australian Infantry Brigade were landed. After the end of the war, Westralia was one of the ships at Ambon on 22 September 1945 for the surrender and occupation of the island where the 164 survivors of Gull Force prisoners had already been taken off on 10 September. She was later used for the repatriation of Australian troops, before being paid off in September 1946. The Royal Australian Engineers (RAE) is a corps of the Australian Army (although the word corps does not appear in their name or on their badge). The RAE is ranked fourth in seniority of the corps of the Australian Army, behind the Staff Cadets, Armoured and Artillery Corps. The Corps was formed by the amalgamation of the various colonial engineer corps of the States and territories of Australia in 1902[2] and since then has served in various conflicts including World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War. The Corps has also served on numerous peacekeeping operations and is currently involved in the Australian contribution to the war in Afghanistan. The RAE provides combat engineering, construction and other technical support to the Australian Defence Force. One of the main roles of the Corps is to provide mobility and counter mobility capabilities to the Australian Army and its allies. This means enhancing the ability of friendly forces to move while denying movement to enemy forces. In order to provide these capabilities, engineers are required to conduct many tasks including penetrating minefields, locating and disarming booby traps, purifying water and building roads and bridges. The newsletter from August 1955. It featured photos of the Legacy staff, including Miss Dorrie Vines the Matron of Stanhope. It summarises her life before joining Stanhope on 11 November 1946. She had served with distinction overseas during World War 2 as a Major with the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps. At the beginning of 1940 she went to the Middle East and served as Senior Sister of No.1 Casualty Clearing Station and shortly afterwards was appointed Sister-in-charge of the No.3 Casualty Clearing Station. She returned to Australian in 1943 and was appointed Matron of a hospital in Alice Springs and in 1944 she again left Australia for New Guinea as Matron of the 2/11 Australian General Hospital. For her war service she was awarded the medal of an Associate of the Royal Red Cross in 1943 and was also mentioned in despatches. These photos were taken at Training Camps in Australia, Shepparton, Royal Park, Darby Camp, Balcombe, Alice Springs, NT, Larrakeyah, Darwin, Bombing of Darwin, Alice Springs, Adelaide River, New Guinea. There is several interesting photos of damage to Darwin Hotels by AIF units disgruntled at not being sent overseas. During World War II, Wanganella was converted to serve as an Australian Hospital Ship (AHS). Between 19 May 1941 and 1946, AHS Wanganella carried wounded and sick evacuees from the Middle East, New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Borneo and the South Pacific, travelling over 251,011 nautical miles (464,872 km) and transporting 13,385 wounded. The menu is printed on fawn cardboard. The menu has been torn along the spine and rearranged at some time to put on display. There is evidence of glue or tape damage at the back of each corner of the card. Some grease and finger marks are evident on the front and back of the card. The printing is very legible. The heading 'Christmas Greetings' is at the top of the front page and 'Christmas Day 1942' at the bottom of the page. Originally the menu was assembled as a leaflet with the menu on the inside of the second sheet. Since this time, the menu has been torn along the middle fold and the second page sheet taped to the first page. There is a red cross on the front page with a printed illustration of the Wanganella superimposed over the top. H.M.A.H.S. Wanganella and the dinner menu are printed in dark blue ink. A group of Australian soldiers photographed outside "The Dome of the Rock" shrine in Jerusalem. During the Second World War, Palestine was under a British mandate and Australian and New Zealand soldiers were back helping the British army to stop the Germans from capturing Egypt and the Suez Canal. They fought alongside several Palestinian brigades enlisted into the British Army under The Palestine Regiment. The soldier sitting second from right is Sergeant Stanley Swainson BEDFORD VX79894 2/24 Battalion. Bedford was born 30/12/1907 and enlisted at Caulfield on 18/5/1942 aged 34 years. He served in the Middle East between August 1942 and February 1942 and Milne Bay New Guinea between August 1943 and March 1944 prior to his discharge on 9/6/1945. He was the Battalion Tailor and is mentioned on page 251 of the book 2/24 - A history of the 2/24 Australian Infantry Battalion edited by R.P. Serle. World famous "Dome of the Rock", site of the ancient temple of Solomon and now a Muslim shrine. During the 7th century it served as a testament to the power of the new faith of Islam. The Dome of the Rock is one of the earliest surviving buildings from the Islamic world. This remarkable building is not a mosque, as is commonly assumed and scholars still debate its original function and meaning. Mary Everard met Lance Gibson met in South Australia when Lance and a mate rang the local hospital to see if there were any off duty nurses who would go to the pictures with them. After several other outings the pair both ended up travelling on the Queen Elizabeth I to Egypt, Mary as nurse in the Australian Army Nursing Service and Lance as a lieutenant in the 2/3rd Australian Machine Gun Battalion. After spending much of the three week journey together, they continued to spend what free time they had together. When Lance found out he was to ship out to Indonesia in January 1942 the couple came to an understanding that they would marry after war. Several weeks after Lance's departure, Mary's unit returned to Australia on the Strathallen, where they nursed in hospitals in Queensland. Lance became a POW of the Japanese, one of the lucky 72 out of 257 Australians in his group to survive the war.
