Report by the Victorian Parliamentary Public Works Committee on "The Plenty Road, Preston, Tramway Extension Inquiry" - 1967. The inquiry examined the MMTB's proposal to extend the East Preston line 0.7miles or 1.3km. The Committee took evidence from the MMTB, bus operators, the Victorian Railways, residents, La Trobe University, Preston City Council and others. The Committee recommended against the proposal. The report lists those members of Parliament involved. The line was subsequently extended by 1.2 kilometres from Tyler Street to Boldrewood Parade during 1983 and subsequently to Bundoora. Pamphlet 6 fold A3 to DL, titled "Tram Service Changes - Routes 58 - William St" affecting routes 11, 12, 48, 58, 86 96 and 109 - detailing the changes for the reconstruction of William St between Flinders Lane and Dudley St. Work reduced the track centres (once laid out for centre poles) and the provision of a set of scissors cross overs and super stops at Bourke and La Trobe St (Flagstaff Station). This cup was produced by Ken Sadler as a souvenir of the 150th anniversary of the settlement of Warrnambool. Ken Sadler was a potter in Liebig Street, Warrnambool for many years (end of 20th century and beginning of 21st century). Warrnambool was founded as a planned town in 1847 to provide port facilities for the produce of squatters who had settled in the area. The town centre was surveyed by William Pickering at the request of Superintendent La Trobe of Melbourne and the first land sales were held in Melbourne in July 1847. The celebrations to mark the 150th anniversary of Warrnambool included concerts, race meetings, church services and the erection of an anniversary tablet on Cannon Hill. Ken Sadler, a well-known Warrnambool potter, made 500 of these cups which are now collectible souvenirs of the city’s 150th anniversary celebrations. This one retained by the Warrnambool and District Historical Society is numbered 189. The 150th anniversary of the founding of Warrnambool was an important event in the city’s history.This is a ceramic cup with a round base and larger rounded body with a round overhanging rim at the top opening. The cup is mottled green with an impressed image of a ship and lettering in white, gold and brown. These two works of art are by Dr Don Edgar, a sociologist, educator and author. He taught sociology at Stanford University, the University of Chicago, Monash University and La Trobe University and was the founding Director of the Australian Institute of Family Studies. In the 1950s Dr Edgar was a student at Warrnambool High School and these works of art were produced at that time. For a school project he researched the early history of the Warrnambool Art Gallery and some of its collection, dating from the 19th century. In 2019 he published a book, ‘Art For the Country’, the story of Victoria’s regional art galleries and the book includes information on the founding and the later history of the Warrnambool Art Gallery.These works of art are of interest as they were painted by Dr Don Edgar, a noted academic and author today and a former resident of Warrnambool. St James Church, "Church of the Pioneers", was the first Church, first Anglican Church, and is the oldest building in Melbourne. The foundation stone was laid in 1839 by the Superintendent of the District of Bourke, Charles La Trobe, later Governor of the Colony of Victoria. The Church was opened in 1842 and the first Bishop Charles Perry was installed in the Cathedral in 1848 when its status changed to that of Cathedral. Its status changed back to that of a Parish church after 1891 when St Paul's Cathedral in Swanston Street was opened. St James is known as the "Church of the Pioneers" as it served as the place of worship, marriage, baptism and burial of many of the first families in the District of Bourke and the Colony of Victoria. St James Old Cathedral is of the most important historic value to the community of Victoria and to the Australian nation as the first Anglican Church founded within 4 years of the settlement of Melbourne. It represents and conserves the very earliest history of white settlement in Victoria and preserves the church associated history of the Pioneer families of Victoria in its collection of original records and artefacts. Late Neo-Georgian style stone church building with bluestone footings. Octagonal upper one storey bell tower housing eight bells supported by two storey square towers. Body of church has sloping roof and 4 stained glass ornamental windows on each of west and east sides with decorative sanctuary window to the north. "Katherine Hattam’s exuberant work, Powerlines Merri Creek equalises the natural environment with man-made constructions as she explores the hybrid landscape of local waterways and their locations. Hattam’s art practice comprises drawing, collage, printmaking and sculpture. Craig HARRISON Dr Craig Harrison has held solo exhibitions regularly since the mid-1970s, including curated exhibitions at the La Trobe University, Australian Catholic University, and the Ballarat Fine Art Gallery. He was a finalists in a number of prestigious awards and prizes, including the Dobell Prize for Drawing (2010, NSW), and the Rick Amor Prize for Drawing (2016, Ballarat). Craig Harrison is also a respected art educator, who had taught fine art at the Deakin Univerity, MLC, and ACU between 1975 and 2004. Mayday Hills Mental Hospital was originally constructed in 1864 under the name of the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum. It was built for locals in need of help who were kept in the local gaol. In its first decade, the residents of the hospital were used as menial labourers but over time, as mental healthcare progressed, were cared for in more nuanced ways. This site became a training hospital for nurses in the 1960's. Eventually, mental health patients were moved to other care facilities and Mayday Hills was operating as a geriatric care facility. It was closed in 1995, after which the buildings and their grounds were purchased to La Trobe University to be used as a campus. The university sold the site in 2011 to private ownership. This is an original Victorian Government document containing the printed version of 37 reports and letters regarding the building of the first Allansford bridge completed early in 1852. The correspondence dates from October 1850 to February 1852 and includes letters and reports from Melbourne Government employees such as Robert Hoddle, Chief Surveyor, David Lennox, Superintendent of Bridges and Lieutenant – Governor Charles La Trobe. The correspondence from local settlers included the names of William and John Allan, John Davidson and James Coulstock. The correspondence shows that some settlers in the Warrnambool/Port Fairy district wanted a portion of the Government allocated funds spent on the local roads and bridges in other locations. The 1852 Allansford bridge cost £480 and was replaced in 1870. This document has strong historical significance as it relates to one of the earliest State government works in the district and records the public imput into the decision.. Correspondence held by the library has John Denniston Wood (1829-1914), a barrister and politician, presenting the portrait to the Library Committee in 1867. Wood hopes that the painting will "hang there [in the Court] in like manner as the portraits of many of the sages of the law are held in the Courts at Guildhall". Wood also provides information about the painter, Mr Mosely "now deceased", but who was "selected by Sir WIlliam himself" to undertake the commission. Early accounts have the painting hanging in a prominent position in the 'old' Court house at La Trobe and Russell Streets; the portrait was moved down to the library in 1884, when the portraits of Barry, Stawell and Molesworth were also commissioned. Sir William a'Beckett was the first chief justice of the colony of Victoria, having previously had a busy career at the Sydney bar. The portrait is of historic signifcance because of its subject Sir William a'Beckett and its long association with the Court. This scarf was commissioned by Ben Mountford who was part of the Collaborative Research Centre in Australian History (CRCAH) based at the Federation University SMB Campus (former Ballarat School of Mines). Ben now works at Australian Catholic University, but before that he held a lectureship at Federation University Australia as well as research fellowships at La Trobe University and the Huntington Library, and a lectureship at the University of Buckingham. From 2008-15 he was at Oxford University. Up to eight scarves were made in the Ballarat School of Mines colours for various staff members for the 2016 Australian History Association Conference which was held in Ballarat. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-36: Jessie Watson was a daughter of the McGregor family who came to the Island in the very early days. Their selection was one of the most exposed areas on the Island. Jessie was married for a brief period and continued, with her brother Charlie, to work the family farm. Jessie was a hard worker and died in 1963 aged 98. The Plaque on her grave was donated by the Phillip island & District Historical Society. 466-37: Malcolm Sutherland. Malcolm died age 8 years while on a holiday on Phillip Island. His father was Dr. Alexander Sutherland who conducted his own school "Carlton College" Melbourne. Dr Sutherland was also appointed to the Melbourne Public Library committee for the papers taken to England by Governor La Trobe in May 1894. Mayday Hills Mental Hospital was originally constructed in 1864 under the name of the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum. It was built for locals in need of help who were kept in the local gaol. In its first decade, the residents of the hospital were used as menial labourers but over time, as mental healthcare progressed, were cared for in more nuanced ways. This site became a training hospital for nurses in the 1960's. Eventually, mental health patients were moved to other care facilities and Mayday Hills was operating as a geriatric care facility. It was closed in 1995, after which the buildings and their grounds were purchased to La Trobe University to be used as a campus. The university sold the site in 2011 to private ownership. This postcard depicts the Mayday Hills Mental Hospital (Titled as 'Asylum for insane') from a distance and includes the surrounding grounds and farmlands.Mayday Hills Mental Hospital is a historically significant site for many factors. It is representative of healthcare practice in nineteenth century Victoria. It contains rare examples of construction and architecture. Taken circa 1870, depicting twenty-eight staff members divided by gender standing in front of the Beechworth mental asylum. Constructed between 1864 and 1867 to the designs by the Public Works Department (PWD) is the Beechworth Lunatic Asylum that was renamed Mayday Hills. The decommissioned asylum was one of the largest psychiatric hospitals in Victoria and consisted of sixty-seven buildings, one thousand two hundred patients and five hundred staff members. The asylum was predominately inhabited by long-stay patients but there was active out-patients. The asylum was one of the first asylums to focus on treatment and rehabilitation instead of institutional confinement. At the asylum active works was considered imperative and workshops were located near the male accommodations and laundries and drying yards near the female accommodation. The asylum closed in 1995 and was sold to La Trobe University before being closed and sold again in 2011 to a private owner. This photograph is historically significant as it provides insight into the importance of Beechworth mental asylum as the asylum demonstrates the changing approaches to the treatment of mental illness in Victoria from confinement to treatment and rehabilitation. The Working Men’s College was founded in 1881 by a prominent grazier and philanthropist, The Hon. Francis Ormond, who donated £5000 towards the establishment of the college. The Council of the Melbourne Trades Hall then matched Ormond's initial donation by rallying its members. On 4 June 1887, the college opened in its purpose-built building on the corners of Bowen Street and La Trobe Street in Melbourne, with a gala ceremony. It became the third official provider of higher education in the new Colony of Victoria (the Melbourne Athenaeum was founded in 1839 and the University of Melbourne in 1853). The college was the predecessor to the current-day Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University). Adjoining the college in the 1890s were the Supreme Court of Victoria (later the Melbourne Magistrates' Court) and the Melbourne Gaol - both which are now part of RMIT today.
