The Speedweve is a tiny darning loom advertised as ‘Lancashire’s smallest loom’. It was manufactured by E & A Chesstok Ltd of Rusholme, Manchester in 1947/48. It is basically a little loom for mending socks and holes in clothing. - This item was a common household item used a time when people still felt it worth the effort to darn socks.A metal Speedweve - a small darning tool.The slide at the top pushes back and forth making the 10 copper hooks rotate one way then the other. Clothing rationing was gazetted in May 1942 and continued until June 1948. It allowed each person 112 coupons per year and each item of clothing had a coupon value. eg. A man's suit was worth 38 coupons and a pair of socks were 4 couponsWW11 Clothing Ration Card: Commonwealth of Australia Clothing Ration Card Rig. D.1 1947 Issue. The name has been rubbed out with black ink. The number V A 114567. Underneath are small tickets individually numbered with clothing and 1947 printed on. The numbers run from 33 to 56. On the right side is a large X with name. Card No. 1947. To the right of that are boxes with the year 1947 in each and A. B. D. F. inside each box. On the back is instruction if found. This album was presented to the then Governor of Victoria, The Earl of Stradbroke, by the fathers of soldiers and returned soldiers of Phillip Island, on 16/2/1923. The album was obtained by the Phillip Island & District Historical Society at an auction of The Earl's possessions, on 7/3/1990. Contained in this album are postcards with Registration Nos. 85-00 to 85-48.Photograph Album containing 48 postcards of Phillip Island. The cover of the album is made of brown vellum(?) on cardboard and has a vellum (?) thong tying the pages together. On the front is an embossed lady and embossed gold lettering. This one contained meat, milk, honey, cheese and jelly powder. It was organised through the “Bristol Society of Melbourne”.
