Photograph - The Johns family of Selby
B&W photo of the Johns family of Selby. Photo appears to date from c. 1930s. They are outside, with a hedge directly behind them. L-r, Martha Johns, a young woman sitting in a wooden chair. She is wearing a floral summer dress with a dark bow at the neckline. Martha was born in 1916. A young man, William David (Dave) Johns, stands, wearing a three-piece suit and tie. His left hand rests on the back of the chair of the next woman. This older woman, Alice, sits at a small table and has her left hand resting on an open book. She wears a dark skirt, light patterned blouse, and dark cardigan flecked with a lighter colour. She is wearing a necklace and she has round-framed glasses. Another young man, Ernest Johns, stands to her right. He is also dressed in three-piece suit and tie. He has his right hand placed on his right hip. A young woman, Florence Johns, sits in a wicker chair. She is wearing a dark outfit with a pale collar. Her hair is parted on the side and braided into two plaits. An older man, William John Johns, sits in a wooden chair. He is wearing a three-piece suit and tie. His waistcoat buttons up high on his chest, more of an old style suit than the two young men. He has grey hair and a moustache. All members of the group are smiling slightly. The photo was taken at the family farm, Hillandale, in Selby. Letter - Correspondence, 8/07/1950
The writer says it is very difficult to get accommodation in postwar Oslo, especially during the tourist season. He is paying four kronor a night for a shared room in the Pension whereas he was paying $4 a week for a room in New York. There is no shortage of work although there is food rationing and fruit and meat is scarce and expensive. People live on fish and potatoes.Quinn CollectionFour page letter written on both sides of two sheets of unlined buff-coloured paper (0843.a1-2). Each page is stamped with the letterhead of the Hotel Campbell, Poughkeepsie, New York. The hotel coat-of-arms is displayed top centre of the page and in the left upper corner is a picture of the hotel. Written underneath is Louis W. Parsons, Owner and Manager. Photograph - Port Melbourne Railway United Football Club, Premiers 1925-26, 1926
From William Hegarty's collection, donated by daughter Barbara Hegarty Gardiner. By 1925 Railway United were effectively the PMFC Seconds and were referred to in the media as Port Melbourne Junior Football Club although the Railway United name remained in use locally for many years. The Victorian Junior Football Association (VJFA) had been split into two sections. Section B consisted of teams associated with senior clubs playing in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) with unaligned teams making up Section A. Finals were played between the top teams in each section and then the two winners (premiers) played off in a final match to determine which club won the John Wren Shield as premier of the VJFA. 1925: Port Melbourne 12.11.83 def Williamstown 6.12.48 at Yarraville on 5 Sep 1925 to claim the B Section premiership. In the challenge match for the John Wren Shield played at the Motordrome, 3 Oct 1925, Yarraville 10.15.75 def Port Melbourne 5.10.40. 1926: Port Melbourne 12.11.83 def Northcote 6.12.48 at the Motordrome on 18 Sep 1926 to claim the VJFA VFA Section premiership. Again Port 11.11.77 lost to Yarraville 15.16.106 in the challenge match for the John Wren Shield played at the Motordrome, 2 Oct 1926. Yarraville were then able to claim the John Wren Shield outright and hold it permanently as a result of winning it on three occasions.Photograph of Railway United Football Team Premiers 1925-26sport - australian rules football, jim hall, bill wilson, ern atkinson, george murphy, bert roune (?), mick bragg, alby keogh, william (bill) hegarty, tom davis, bill johnson, archibald (arch) todd, port melbourne railway united football club, port melbourne junior football club, alby mowlam -

... Robertson, both Captains in the Salvation Army. Reverend William... Robertson, both Captains in the Salvation Army. Reverend William ...Guests at the West Riding Hall, Henry Petrie Community Centre, Montmorency on the occasion of a buffet dinner as part of the Shire of Eltham centenary celebrations. Left: Mr Higgins, Methodist Minister, Eltham and Mrs Higgins and Brian & Irene Robertson, both Captains in the Salvation Army. Reverend William ‘Bill’ Leslie Higgins (b. 15/1/1925, Renmark, Victoria, d. 18/10/1998) and Mrs Ella May Higgins (née Leersen b. 3/11/1921, Avoca, Victoria, d. 24/5/2003). William was ordained to the Methodist Church of Australia on September 1, 1959. Bill and Ella were involved with many communities throughout Bill’s full-time service until 1989. These parishes included Underbool, Wycheproof, Drysdale, Wonthaggi, South Yarra, Eltham, Nathalia, Murchison and Seymour. Bill and Ella touched many thousands lives during their ministry. Bill passed away in 1998 while assisting with a Sunday evening service near Drysdale, and Ella continued to dedicate her time to others until her death in 2003. Information received via Brian and Irene Robertson's son, Mark (15 Dec 2023), noted that in 1969 they lived in Prahran and by 1971 they would have been appointed to Briar Hill (now Greensborough). Brian Robertson's parents and at least one set of his grandparents were also Salvation Army officers (primarily from Victoria), whilst Irene was originally from Perth and she had 2 other sisters that became Salvation Army Officers as well. Irene also had 3rd sister and younger brother who were linked to the Salvos (as was Brian’s brother). After several years in church work, Brian and Irene transferred over to the Social Services branch of the Salvos and worked with homeless men, broken families, drug & alcohol dependent clients (similar to what Brendan Nottle does in Burke St), family stores and eventually seniors (nursing homes). Brian, known as Robbie passed away in 2013, and Irene is currently living in a retirement unit. [Dedc 2023]This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.'
