Book, E.D. Jenkins and Lloyd Jenkins, "Sebastopol Victoria - A Historical Survey of Early Sebastopol - 1864- 1964", 1989
Book - 92 pages plus card covers, a historical survey of the Sebastopol district. Originally written by E.D. Jenkins for the Borough of Sebastopol's centenary in 1964, reprinted with additional text by Lloyd Jenkins to recognise the 125th anniversary of the Borough covering the years 1965 to 1989. Book covers mining history, churches, the Borough Council, early days of the district and various points, eg cabmen, horse trams and electric trams, schools, the Mechanics Institute, various clubs, fire brigade, hotels, industries, and programme of events to celebrate the centenary. The second part of the book, covering the period is laid out in a chronological order with forward by Cr. Donald, the Mayor with many photographs. Centre page has a large map of the district showing the many mines, leads, roads and other historic locations. Tramway photos are horse tram No. 7, ESCo 17 at depot (all on file) and a photo showing a horse tram heading north along Albert St. with the shopping centre in the background - see image. Photo taken just after the tram has crossed the roadway. Copy of the horse tram heading north along Albert St. made Oct. 2001 for the "gold, Gold GOLD" temporary exhibition - colour laser print onto card, with Velcro dots on rear. Photocopy of a transcript prepared by Lloyd Jenkins and draft copy with corrections in red ink of an interview with Mr. H. G. Gilbert at his home at 423 Skipton St. Ballarat, 23 March 1987. Mr. Gilbert was a SEC Linesman and was 80 years old at the time. The interview reviews Mr. Gilbert working life prior to starting with ESCo, joining the SEC, WW2, the Guncotton or munitions plant in Ballarat West, power supply, DC power supply, stories, the Social Club (EST). Date was shown as 25/7, but later corrected - 12/2006 Tram has Cinzano roof advertisements and advertisements for White Horse Whiskey and The Age newspaper on the front dash panel. In the background is the shelter at the terminus. Photo also shows the trolley pole pan placed at a terminus to assist with the location of the trolley pole at night. Six issues of "Tram Tracks - The Electric Traction Monthly" of the Australian Electric Traction Association. Each issue has a standard cover, of the magazine name etc, featuring "Wee Folks Productions" models but are in different colours, all have been saddled stapled with two staples, except No. 6. The Volume and date details have been over printed. Back covers inside back covers have the same advertisements but the font varies vary. The six issues contain advertisements for the Wee Folks productions, Hartleys Sports store, Hearns Hobbies, Wattle Park, Johnson's Variety Store, Barnes Tennis Centre, The Model Dockyard, Robilt Models, Meadmore Model Engineering and Austral Bronze Pty Ltd, Hearns Hobbies, Christie Scale Model Railway and Equipment, Herbert Small (Meccano), the American Subscription Agency, Manufacturers' Mutual Insurance Ltd. 2465.1 - Vol. 2 No. 1 - 16 pages, Jan 1947, with cover printed in red. Yields information about postcard printing, Bendigo Charing Cross in 1906 and a person who appears to have collected cards.Printed colour postcard of Charing Cross Bendigo with two trams in the view and crew men standing in front of the trams with buildings, the fountain in the background. Looks along Mitchell St. Title of the postcard is "Charing Cross and Mitchell St, Bendigo". Has in view, R. Curtains City Club Hotel with a "Concerts" sing on it and on the other corner, a building with the name "Gibsons Corner". Note the direction of the trolley poles on the trams, the wrong way around for the direction of the street. On rear of postcard is a message address to Miss Jani Baskin, San Antonio, Texas USA, post marked ex Bendigo 28.9.1906 and Seattle WA, Oct. 2? 1906, with a Victorian stamp and a two Cent (due to postage underpaid) US stamp. Centre divided postcard with spaces marked for correspondence and address. On the left hand edge is "Printed in Germany" trams, tramways, bendigo, mitchell st, charing cross, tram 14, tram 40 -
