This album shows a collection of photographs some of which are labelled as Munster Services Club. Some show the Bookshop at the TOC H building. There are photos of soldiers in parade drills and in training exercises as well as social events. One is labelled D Craven & Rab, Munster 1954. Another is labelled London bus 2 RTR Munster. The 2 RTR was a tank regiment in the British Army and was stationed at the Swinton Barracks in Munster from 1952-1959. There are also a number of loose photos showing local scenes such as London Bridge and Needle Rock at Childers Cove. Others depict floats in a parade showing Peace Woollen Mill. Others are small postcards of MaryBorough and Brisbane Queensland. There is also a photograph of the Nestanglo basketball team, Victorian champions circa 1940’s. This collection of photographs has limited local relevance as there is limited provenance. This album contains photographs that belonged to Warrnambool residents, Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie and appears to date from the 1960s and beyond. Dorothy Ardlie (1910-1993) and Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnambool lawyer, Williams Ardlie and his wife, Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool.This album is of minor interest as a record of the lives of Dorothy and Agnes Ardlie, members of a prominent 20th century Warrnambool family. The photographs, especially those taken of interiors of houses, will be useful for display and research. This is a brown hard cover photograph album with 16 black and white photographs and one loose newspaper cutting. The cover has a gold decorative pattern around the edges. The Gown of the Year Program was a gala event in Melbourne's cultural calendar. All boys aged 12 to 17 began Compulsory Military Training in Australia from 1912. The following year the militia was reformed with Ballarat East being allocated the 70th Infantry and Ballarat West being allocated the 71st Infantry. The 71st Battalion was known as the Ballarat West Battalion until changing to (City of Ballarat) Infantry with its depots reaching as far as Warrnambool. In this photograph of the prize winning 71st Battalion Bugle Band a young 16 year old Michael Taffe is a bugler and won several awards with the band and as a solo bugler. This aerial photograph shows the Kew Cottages, and doctors/clergy residences on the north side of Wills Street, before the State Government sold the land for residential development. The doctors residences in Wills street were made of 'Glen Iris' Olympic Bricks. Sephia-toned photograph of May D. Harrison from the shoulders upwards. Nameplate at base of photograph reads 'May D. Harrison / First / Hon. Secretary & Librarian / 1894-1912'. Mrs Harrison looks to the right of the frame, and is wearing a dress with gathered bodice, puffed sleeves and lace neckline. Her small drop earrings are visible, as her hair is swept up, with two brooches on the bodice and neckline. A length of chain is worn around her neck, although its base remains out of shot. May Harrison was one of the first Braille transcribers trained by Tilly Aston and undertook the position of Honorary Secretary at the formation of the Victorian Association of Braille Writers (VABW) in 1894. Offering use of a room in her home in St Kilda for the storage of Braille books, she became the first librarian for the VABW. Mrs Harrison also taught Braille to other participants and her house became a meeting point for readers and transcribers alike. Her death in 1912 was greatly mourned, and a Memorial Fund set up in her honour, as well as a grave marker and tablet at the Braille library. Her niece Minnie Crabb, who assisted her work, assumed the role of librarian after Mrs Harrison's death. Intersection of Officer and Townsend Streets, Mortlake. Early street lamps and the telegraph line from Hexham to Mortlake Post & Telegraph Office in Shaw Street erected in 1862 are visible. Mount Shadwell Store purchased by A. S. Stewart in the mid 1880's from Clarke & Co. of Geelong. In this photograph one can see the previous two stores - the building in the centre would have been the original Store owned and built by the Rae & Robertson circa 1860 and sold to Grieve & Benn in 1862 - the bulding on the right hand side was the business premises of the Mount Shadwell Store owned by Grieve & Benn later used as a storeroom when the building on the right was erected by them to become the main business premises which John Grieve sold to Clarke & Co. of Geelong in 1882 and they to A. S. Stewart It still operates as a supermarket in 2011.Even though in 2011 a facade now covers the entire front of these three building, the original buildings are still within the fabric of the store and includes a cellar in front of the oldest building.
