Photograph, 'Strathmore' 75 Victoria Crescent, Mont Albert
‘Strathmore’ Victoria Crescent (dem.) Joseph Sutton Crow and his wife Jessie (nee Temby) bought this property which had belonged to the Purbrick family in 1924. Sutton was an amateur ‘planner and landscape designer’ and had much pleasure in planning the use of their garden of 100 feet by 400 feet. While part remained rural with sheep, an orchard and vegetable garden, he laid out sweeping designs for the front garden which Jessie enjoyed converting into a garden worthy of display and which did gain prizes in the Herald Garden competitions of the 1930s. They entertained friends and often had as guests University Conservatorium staff and visiting musical personnel. They also opened the garden for local church fund-raising functions. Children, Jean and Ray, had areas set out for their recreation with pets and activities areas. The donor was their daughter. Orbost & District Historical Society
book, Australian Copy Book Fifth Grade, 1920's
This copy book is for the practice of copperplate handwriting and was used at the Orbost School. It was not until the mid-20th century that Australian schools were investigating the modern cursive styles being taught overseas. Writing slates and slate pencils had been a commonplace item of everyday life in colonial Australia. Slates were generally only used by school children in the most junior grades By Class III, however, school children in Victoria had normally passed beyond the need for slates in shaping letters and used ink and copybooks instead. Writing slates often continued to be used for arithmetic exercises. the use of slates was discontinued mainly because paper became cheaper and writing on paper was deemed to be more hygienic. This item is an example of a school text book commonly used for the practice of handwriting in most primary schools in Australia. It shows a style of handwriting not commonly used today. The Cameron family is significaant in the history of Orbost.A school handwriting copy book. It contains examples of copperplate writing for copying and practice. On the front cover there are drawings of a kangaroo, emu, platypus and echidna in each corner. The book is titled "AUSTRALIAN COPY BOOK FIFTH GRADE No. 4". It is designed for use in all states and New Zealand. Inside a banner is "small hand proverbs geography commercial terms". All print is black.on front cover: Jean Cameron Inside front cover: Jean Cameron 1924, J.M. Ralston 1924handwriting education cameron -

Town Hall, The Bendigo Choral Society, 36th Grand Concert. Season 1927, Second Concert. Wednesday, August 31, 1927. Conductor W C Frazier ARCO. Presentation of S Coleridge-Taylor's Work. Part 1 Hiawatha's Wedding Feast. Artists Miss Jean Walker, Mr Hector Taylor. Part 2 The Death of Minnehaha, Artists: Mrs Lena Darvall, Mr Wilfred Taylor. Pianiste: Miss Eileen Hains ATCL. S Coleridge-Taylor's adaptation of Longfellow's poem, 'Hiawatha,' is a three-part Cantata, comprising the above two sections and 'Hiawatha's Depature.' Frequently the work is given abridged. The composer was an Englishman of African decent, and this, perhaps, led him to take such a keen interest in American Indian legends and negro folk songs. The work, while preserving the local color of the Indian legend, produces music which is bizarre and colorful, yet extremely beautiful. Hon. Sec. E H Collett. Hon. Asst. Sec. Newspaper - LYDIA CHANCELLOR COLLECTION: A WHEEL TURNS FULL CIRCLE
A newspaper article titled 'A wheel turns full circle. Amy Huxtable looks at the recent rebirth of Bendigo's wine industry.' Wine making was one of the main industries in Bendigo in the 1800s. Mr. Jean T. Deravin of Chateau Dore Vineyard was a skilled vigneron. In 1893 phylloxera was found in some vineyards and all vineyards were needlessly pulled out. A new era in wine making was begun in the 1970s. Mr. Deravin's great grandson Ivan Grose now has grapes back at Chateau Dore. In February 1971 a new era in Bendigo wine making began with grapes grown in Bendigo by Mr. Ron Andrew of Maiden Gully were first released as wine by Chateau Tahbilk and Matchett's. There are two photos in this article - a selection of the Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon released on the 13/02/76 and a photo of Mr. Ron Andrews holding his first vintage. Note in the background behind Mr. Andrews are his historic stables which he restored. 13/02/1976.bendigo, industry, vineyards and wine making., lydia chancellor collection, collection, wine growing, vineyards, bendigo wine making, wine history, history, vintage wines, mr. jean deravin, mr. ron andrews, chateau dore, chateau tahbilk, industry, amy huxtable, grapes, buildings -

Domestic object - Food Mill, 1950s+
The Moulin Legumes No. 3 food mill is a useful manual kitchen utensil for milling, sieving, grating and pureeing various food types (legumes, vegetables, fruit and herbs). The food is placed in the chamber and the handle is turned to push the food through the holes in the blades and into a bowl placed below it. The various blades allow choice of consistency as they have different sized holes. It was in use before electric food processors were invented and is still used in modern times. The vegetable mill was invented by the French inventor and industrialist, Jean Mantelet, in 1932. Inspired by his wife, he invented the mill, which simply and quickly made cooked food into puree or mash. He said "My greatest pride is to rid women of a daily chore." The business started using the brand Moulinex in 1956 and today is it a household name linked to useful and good quality kitchen utensils and aids. The name comes from combining the words Moulin Express, which was an electric coffee mill. The embossed text "BREVETE S G D G" was a type of French patent without a government guarantee. It stopped being used in 1968. This Moulin is an example of a kitchen utensil used before electric food processors were invented, and had gained popularity to process foods such as vegetable's, fruit, nuts and herbs in a domestic or commercial kitchen. The first model of the Moulin Legunes was invented in 1932 by French industrialist Jean Mantelet to meet the reduce labour for housewives in the kitchen. Millions of this labour saving device have since been sold. Food mill, metal, for manually processing food. Conical-shaped food chamber, two U-shaped handles on opposite sides, two clips inside. Three interchangeable twelve-sided cutting blades, each with different sized holes. Made in France. Model is Moulin Legumes No. 3. Impressed into the side, within a circle "MADE IN FRANCE - BREVETE S G D C -" and in centre "2" (Brevete is French word for Patent)flagstaff hill, warrnambool, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, made in france, french kitchen utensils, moulin, food preparation, kitchen utensil, food mill, food processor, sieve, moule, mouli, grater, puree, hand operated, moulin legumes no. 3, vingage, kitchen gadget, moulineux, jean mantelet -
