The author's name isn't recorded. Many Legatees names are mentioned in the story it tells. One of the final stanzas shows the spirit of comradeship and sense of duty. A promotional car sticker of Healesville Sanctuary specialising in Australian Fauna and Flora. This item was displayed at the front entrance to encourage visitors to purchase and promote the Sanctuary. This car sticker was a very popular and sought after souvenir selling for 25 cents contributing to the Sanctuary's income. Healesville Sanctuary was the first institution to breed platypus in a total captive situation.and is also the only institution in the world to breed LyrebirdsA promotional circular car sticker depicting a lyrebird tail in full display above a platypus side on. Has dark green border at ouside edge of sticker; colours are black, gold and green. Sticker is in a wooden glass frame and has a dynamo label glued to upper edge of glass. Promoting the Graphic Design/Multimedia program being offered by the University of Ballarat at the Mt Helen Campus. Promoted course as "one of the smallest and arguably the best three year programs of its kind in Australia and the South Pacific region." The brochure lists student awards received including Platinum and Gold in the AGFA International Young Designer Contest, 1999; two meritorious awards in The Art Directors Club Student Awards, New York, USA 1999; Graphis New Talent 1999; two Gold in Souther Cross Packaging Awards, 1998. At time of publication, the School of Arts, Visual Arts reportedly had 210 students with majors in Graphic Design/Multimedia, Ceramics/3D, Painting, Drawing, and Multidiscipline. Minors studies included Printmaking, Photography, 3D, 2D, and Graphic Communication. ___ Course aimed to train "independent, flexible thinkers". The course promised to "Promote creativity, originality and imaginative thinking; Develop self-directed learners, displaying initiative in the formation of ideas and the confidence to construct personal responses; Develop appropriate conceptual, technical and professional skills; Develop the student's critical process: ability to undertake research, and to make informed decisions; Clarify thinking, concepts and understanding and deep knowledge, attitudes and skills enabling the designer to respond to community needs." Studio and working environment described as "one open space with working facilities for approximately 75 students across 3 year levels. The area is divided up into work stations where 1st, 2nd and 3rd year students intermix, allowing a natural interaction. These workstations are configurations of six, consisting of two students from each year level. This reinforces the area's ongoing development with an open ethos and cross-level delivery and learning. This item is from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. Arundel was built by Julian Newton-Brown who arrived at Falls Creek in 1957. He had studied Pharmacy at Melbourne University. After developing a love for the mountains, Julian moved to Mt. Beauty and then Falls Creek. He worked for the SEC in the test laboratory at Rocky Valley reading weather instruments. By working several jobs, Julian was able to build a small lodge of 10 beds named “Arundel”, located at 18 Slalom Street, Falls Creek. The lodge is now the “Elk at Falls”. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. Orbost Bowling Club was founded in 1929 and still operates in Orbost today. The Bowling Club was founded by a group of farmers and businessmen. They set about providing a sporting icon for the town. Six rinks were constructed on the current site using horse drawn scoops and drags. The "Back to Orbost” 1937 book, describes the greens as "a bit rough for the first two seasons but now compare favourably with most country greens". Funds for the construction were raised by the issue of debentures at £5 each, and subscriptions were £1/1s/0d ($2.10). (info. Margaret Smith) This menu suggests that dinners for members were held regularly - at least annually and were fairly formal events. This item represents an era when formal dinners were important as a community event. Base of this dinner gong is made from a name plate off a steam engine that was found in the Northern Territory. The two ends supporting the gong are made of either anti tank of anti aircraft bullets that are soldered into salt and pepper shakers that were acquired from a Chinese 'Joss House' in the Northern Territory. The kangaroo and boomerang were copied from an Australian penny.Brass dinner gong suspended on a stainless steel kangaroo and boomerang. Sourced from Alex Stitt's extensive archive, this well used index book provides a fascinating insight into the operations of the designer's graphic design studio in the 1970s. Used as a repository to catalogue client artwork, each contact print was given a hand-written code, evidence of a simple system to manage the process of creating artwork. The book's monochromatic pages speak of a time long past when design was a manual undertaking, a time of hard copies, not hard drives.
