These seven photographs were taken at Bones Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the RAAF School of Radio c1970s. The two units took turns each year to host the event and on this occasion was held at the RAAF School of Radio, Laverton. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash, softball, tennis, touch football, rifle shooting, tug-of-war and volleyball. The “big bone” trophy comprising a large bone from a beast housed inside a wooden framed glass case, was awarded to the winner of the day competition. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and billiards/snooker. The “little bone” (a mounted chicken bone) was the consolation trophy awarded to the winner of the evening competition. The 3-hour bus trip for the visiting unit on their return was typically very raucous. The history of the Bones Day competition is best described in the booklet titled - Bones of Contention Souvenir Program. 1965. Transcript of Evidence given to the Parliamentary Committee of Accounts by Mr W O Strangward, Secretary to the MMTB 13/9/1927 - in response to the question "What would be the extra cost to the public if motor buses were substituted for the existing tramways?" Looks at Fare Revenue, operating cost per vehicle mile, relative average speeds, number of tram and bus miles required to carry 224,000,000 passengers, standing passengers and capacity. Notes that 2.25 buses would be required to replace each existing tramcar. Examines Annual Operating cost for both forms, capital outlay including provision for spares, amortization of the present tramway debt and cost of roads. Has a financial summary showing the additional cost would be 1.878,500 pounds to run buses requiriing a fare increase of 75%. This type of clock was used on the Port Melbourne bus route until its replacement by the Automatic Vehicle Monitoring system (AVM) to record the departure time of bus services from a specific point along the route. Possibly used at the terminus itself. Clock obtained by the Museum from the MMTB at the time of its replacement c1980. Conductors rather than drivers "Punched" the clock when this bus route was operated by half-cab buses. Was originally in a steel case when received. The Museum made the perspex insert in the front door to enable operation by a key c1985 when it was installed in the Museum's Mess Room. See item 9566 for a key that was used.Demonstrates a MMTB Cincinnati manufactured time recording clock.
