Document - General Clean-up Falls Creek Tourist Area
Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A circular outlining detailed instructions related to a cleanup of the Falls Creek Tourist Area. The cleanup resources and support from the Committee would continue as needed until 3rd February 1963.falls creek tourist area management committee, falls creek administration, falls creek accommodation, ski championships -

Memorabilia, Welcome Home Serviette to General Sir John Monash, 1920, 1920
Quite possibly this event was held at the North Melbourne Ragged Boys' Home, so there is every possibility the members of the home produced the serviette. Monash joined the Melbourne University company of the militia in 1884 and became lieutenant in the North Melbourne Battery in 1887. "WELCOME HOME TO GENERAL MONASH. Ex-members of the North Melbourne Battery Australian Garrison Artillery, have arranged a welcome home dinner to their former commanding officer, Lieut.-General Sir John Monash. All ex-members interested are requested to meet on Saturday evening at the Ragged Boys' Home, Latrobe street." Photograph - Friends of the Park float, Port Melbourne Festival, Pat Grainger, Feb 1989
This float was created by members of Friends of the Park, a group formed in 1987 against government proposals to turn the railway and reservation into a grand boulevard to service the proposed Sandridge City 'bayside' development. Members worked for months to make the decorations, added to a trailer. During the festival procession sausages were BBQ'd on the trailer and handed out to the crowd. On arrival at Murphy's Reserve all floats were put out of sight, and few saw the results of their efforts. One of 16 colour photos of Friends of the Park float for the February 1989 Port Melbourne Festival: Nellie Thackruh, Jan Fly and Andrea Ellis in background, finishing preparations in Raglan Streetcelebrations fetes and exhibitions, public action campaigns, jan fly, andrea ellis, nellie thackruh, friends of the park, port melbourne festival
